"Fans of historical fiction will devour this complex portrait of a brilliant and trailblazing genius and the price she paid to advance the frontiers of science." (Beatriz Williams, New York Times best-selling author of Our Woman in Moscow)

The new novel from the New York Times best-selling author of The Mystery of Mrs. Christie!

She changed the world with her discovery. Three men took the credit.

Rosalind Franklin has always been an outsider - brilliant, but different. Whether working at the laboratory she adored in Paris or toiling at a university in London, she feels closest to the science, those unchanging laws of physics and chemistry that guide her experiments. When she is assigned to work on DNA, she believes she can unearth its secrets.

Rosalind knows if she just takes one more X-ray picture - one more after thousands - she can unlock the building blocks of life. Never again will she have to listen to her colleagues complain about her, especially Maurice Wilkins, who'd rather conspire about genetics with James Watson and Francis Crick than work alongside her.

Then it finally happens - the double helix structure of DNA reveals itself to her with perfect clarity. But what unfolds next, Rosalind could have never predicted.

Marie Benedict's powerful new novel shines a light on a woman who sacrificed her life to discover the nature of our very DNA, a woman whose world-changing contributions were hidden by the men around her but whose relentless drive advanced our understanding of humankind.

This book would have been difficult to read for me because of the French words so listening to Nicola Barber was such a wonderful experience for me. The science was so interesting I did not want the story to stop. I will definitely look for more books by these 2 women.

So I held off reading this book because I knew what was coming all throughout it… a woman under appreciated… and other things… but it was beautifully told. Worth reading, of course! I just had to be in the right mindset.

The premise of men stealing a woman scientist's work and taking credit for it is common knowledge for us women, but Benedict manages to blend the scientific with the emotive in this first person POV story. As a result, she allows readers to "feel all the feelings" that validate what we already know, and hope once again, that by telling stories like these, women may one day be treated with the equal respect they deserve. I enjoyed the blunt personality of a "just the facts, Ma'm" scientist she depicted as her main character, the repeated driving force behind her "I am a scientist," the international settings, and the male scoundrels with whom she had to deal.

Nicola Barber handled the accents--British, French, and Yiddish-- with ease. I only wish her delivery in this narrated Audiobook was less breathy.

Overall, a well-told story that allows the reader to pick up small clues as to the story's end. The final chapters satisfy like an delicious dessert.

A Very Satisfying Story

This story is compelling but the book is too long. Early in the reader understands the main characters with her parents, that she loves Paris and the fashion, that she’s committed to her work above all else, etc. Despite or understanding, we read about these things over and over again!

Compelling story but…

Captivating life story of a woman whose research first unearthed the structure of DNA, only to be side-lined by a male-dominated hierarchy. The author's first person structure beautifully carries the reader through Franklin's struggles and determination to make a difference.

Pulls You Right In

Very well written, tragic story of the life of yet another genius woman scientist who gave her life for the research that was stolen by criminal scientific amateurs

Should be a blockbuster Hollywood movie

The story is so relevant to our world today in many ways Rosalind Franklin’s research and genius 70 years ago is brought to light by the author for the world to understand the importance of of her genius

Well written ,well performed and important story
