Publisher's Summary

Rory is waiting at the door of the preschool - a painted picture of his mother, Susan, in his small hand. But Susan isn’t going to see the picture, because she has vanished.

Susan Wheeler is a devoted mother. She would do anything for her three children. She drops them off and picks them up every single day. Until one day when Susan kisses them goodbye and then never comes to pick them up.

Susan’s mother, Mary, is worried. Susan is recently divorced and has been finding things hard recently, but she loves her kids - she’d never leave them.

Susan’s sister, Clare, is furious. It’s just like her to go missing. It’s not the first time, either. Susan has always been a troublemaker. Always seeking attention. She knows Susan has been lying to the family for years. And she knows that Susan has been sneaking out of her family home for weeks....

As the hours turn into days, even Clare becomes fearful for Susan. And, when Mary discovers Susan’s diary, she begins to uncover a dark secret from her childhood. Something no one in the family knew. When the final diary entry leads the police to a man who is discovered dead in a local park, they’re left wondering whether Susan has vanished because she is a victim. Or because she is a suspect....

An explosively compelling crime thriller from best-selling author Carla Kovach - if you love Lisa Gardner, Robert Bryndza, or Clare Mackintosh, you’ll love Her Dark Heart.

Changed narrator

After 4 books with the same narrator they changed it for this book and it pretty much ruined it for me. The voice is everything in an audio book.

Good suspense

This one has the basic story line she used in all 5 books. They were all great to listen and was glad she finally dealt with her own grief. It was getting redundant. I would recommend all the books in the correct order. I will listen again in the future.

Another addictive Gina Hart story!

After listening to the whole Gina Hart series I couldn’t wait for this new story. I listened to it on holiday within about a week and absolutely loved it, it had a few twists which I didn’t see coming.

I was initially not sure about the new narrator but soon didn’t even think about it, she was brilliant.

Cannot wait for the new one to come out.

Story ruined by a cast of horrible characters

I've listened to all the previous books so I was forewarned about Gina's prediliction to the maudlin but she goes overboard in this book, as Mary, the mother of the missing Susan, for some reason is Gina's mother's doppelgänger right down to her every mannerism, Gina muses on this at every possible opportunity, along with her constant anguish over what happened to her deceased husband, which, as any sane woman would agree, was exactly what he deserved and exactly the sane thing to have done.

The main cast of characters, Susan, her husband Rory, her mother Mary, and her sister Clare (Claire?) are a horrible bunch, Mary especially as she seems to be the world's worst mother, always attacking Clare (Claire?) verbally, despite having left her to raise Susan whilst she worked after their father's death, continually haranguing her and then monologuing to herself about what's she done wrong, she seems incapable of stopping until the end, which struck me as even more annoying when she told Rory how she could 'see right through him' despite not having known anything was wrong at all previously! Clare (Claire?) is not the perfect sister but Susan was not perfect either, she had her reasons but I fail to understand why she had never confided in her big sister back when everything went wrong so I had very little sympathy for her, her husband or her mother, or indeed for the simpering Stephanie who was even more annoying than the rest of them.

I can understand how abuse can affect people but this story brings a whole cast of damaged people together in the worst way to produce a most annoying story which annoys from the outset with the police apparently setting out to investigate what was simply an adult not returning home after 24 hours when at no apparent risk (since Mary refused to tell the truth about anything) .

The ONLY character that had any gumption was Phoebe (Susan's daughter) she was definitely a great character but only a small part of the story, which could have been great if it had only dialled down on the self pity, recriminations and the overwhelming doubts.

Bloody Brilliant!

I love this series so was excited to read this book. It didn't disappoint, it was fantastic, a really well written story full of tension, anger, darkness and twists that kept me guessing. I really liked the narrator too, her voice really lent itself to this really emotional and at times distressing story. Thoroughly enjoyed it and I can't wait for the next book in the series. This book totally deserves 5 stars it was excellent.
