Publisher's Summary

It was an irrational decision. Despite having just moved into a beautiful new house, the Williams family gave in to an odd, overwhelming desire to purchase and move into a Victorian home they had come upon by chance. They were curious, of course, as to why the house had, in the past, such a high vacancy rate - no one ever seemed to live in it for a long period of time. But that curiosity didn't last long, because shortly after moving in, strange things began to happen. It became abundantly clear that the home's past owners all had a reason for leaving: fear. The Williams' new home was haunted. At first, the family tried telling themselves there were logical explanations for the strange things they all were witnessing. But before long they came to accept the fact that they were sharing their home with ghosts. Haunted is the Williams family's story from the point of view of the mother, Dorah. Through her chilling reminiscences, we witness the all-too-real goings-on in the house. And we join the family as they seek a way to bring an end to the paranormal events that were occurring with ever more frequency and intensity, and learn why the events began in the first place.

Excellent and entertaining book! Enjoyed it!

Would you listen to Haunted again? Why?

Yes. I love stories about real haunted houses and this one was chilling and intense.

What did you like best about this story?

How the family held together during the haunting.

What does Katina Kalin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

A very good story teller who brings you right into the book.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not really, but I found it so good I didn't want to stop listening to it. I'd definitely listen to it again.

Any additional comments?

If you enjoy true haunting stories, you'd enjoy this book.

REALLY BAD NARRATION AND RECORDING

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Probably no one. There are several parts where the narrator's voice doesn't match from sentence to sentence. It's like there was a revision and the original narrator wasn't available. Also there were parts in the story where I just rolled my eyes and said "Oh please". It sounded like made up BS and parts were thrown in just to try to make certain pieces fit into the story telling. Pretty poor writing and narration

What do you think your next listen will be?

nothing by this author or narrator

Would you be willing to try another one of Katina Kalin’s performances?

nope, never

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

No.

Any additional comments?

Don't waste the credit

Decent story but horrible narration!

The story was pretty good but the lady reading it was horrible. She tried to make the kids in the book sound different and she gave them a lisp. It was like nails on a chalkboard listening to her.

Enjoyable, but not great

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes, it is entertaining, but not great.

If you’ve listened to books by Dorah L. Williams before, how does this one compare?

No

What three words best describe Katina Kalin’s voice?

Pleasant when natural, but grating when doing other voices. The children's voices are irritating.

Do you think Haunted needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No. The story is done.

Any additional comments?

The story was pleasant, a good story. However, I would like the writing style to be less motherly. Hug this, kiss that, gets old. It kind of came across as personal, family business of which I was not a part. Ms.Kalin's voice was pleasant, enjoyable even, when she was speaking as she would normally, but she missed pretty badly when going for male voices. The voices she did for the kids was just painful, and hard to listen to.

This purchase will haunt me for a long time

What disappointed you about Haunted?

The story was dry and meandering. I just couldn't bring myself to care about the events or the characters, and I tried! There was zero chill factor or creep factor. I have never been so bored by paranormal events. I couldn't make it much past 60 minutes before I pulled the plug.

What could Dorah L. Williams have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I can't think of anything. It just didn't appeal to me on any level.

Would you be willing to try another one of Katina Kalin’s performances?

NO WAY! Her narration only added to the problem. I felt like I was five, sitting in the floor of the public library and Miss Katina was reading us a story before nap time. Her portrayal of child characters drove me insane. She used a voice that reminded me of how some people talk to children like they have the intelligence of a doorknob. Her use of a "baby talk" voice elicited actual frowns and grimaces from this reader.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Mega disappointment! I like non-fiction stories that approach the paranormal from middle ground, letting the reader shape opinions and personal atmosphere based on their own perceptions. I was never able to concentrate on the aspects of the haunting because I was too busy not enjoying this book.

Any additional comments?

It didn't work for me at all. The performance was pretty bad BUT that is me. I love stories like those built around Ed and Lorraine Warren's experiences so perhaps I'm tainted. If you like the kind of ghost story one would find haunting the pages of "Good Housekeeping" or "Reader's Digest"... this is your story!

A Family's Journey

What made the experience of listening to Haunted the most enjoyable?

This book caught my attention because it seemed to be the story of a family similar to mine and I wanted to read about how another family dealt with the paranormal. I loved the close attention to detail which helps to paint a picture for listeners. I felt encouraged by the strength of the author as she faced real phenomenon and yet found ways to continue to live her life and to protect her family. Her empathy and ability to see issues from other people's perspective served her well in the telling of her story. I enjoyed the narrator and found her voice and emotion contributed to the way the story was told and how I was able to picture the family and their home so clearly.

Have you listened to any of Katina Kalin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not heard this narrator before.

Any additional comments?

The research that the author does yields some astounding facts. Many folks who experience the paranormal are unable to find details about the history of their homes or the land upon which the home sits. The extensive history available to the author makes this story complete and I believe helped her to stay focused on finding a resolution the haunting her family experienced.

Not bad, if that's what you are looking for.

I like true ghost stories, and this one works. However, the performer tries to do different voices and it comes off as grating and false. As a narrator, she was fine. So is the story, but, like. there is no peril, no fear for the protagonists, and that makes for a straightforward curio piece.

I was intrigued from the beginning

Well written and the activity that took place is more authentic as a haunted house goes. I've been in haunted houses before family owns a house that's haunted and it has a lot of malevolent levels it has been cleansed, blessed and exercise more than once by a Catholic priest, I don't believe he was an exorcist but more like the father of the church that my family attends to.

I live in a house that's about to be 100 years old and it is haunted by a benevolent spirit I do believe it's more than one, also there are times that others seem to come and go in this house. I've been here since the late 80s... 1987 to be precise and now it's 2021... we're doing okay there's some times that we cleanse it and they come back but we always make sure the bad was never come and if they do they're gone right away. although I do believe the two that stay are happy here, one of them is the original owner of the house possibly the one who built it??? And the other one is mischievous, we kind of keep him around because he's funny at times like to scare the crap out of people now and then. very mild stuff like maybe Shake the couch that they're sitting on or rattle something a little bit, mild poltergeist activity, like pulling blankets off people when they are trying to sleep.

the one that we think was the original owner here or built it, there are times he gets angry and he lets us know by stomping around in the house you can hear him walking in opening and slamming the back door or the front door. our front door and our back door are heavy solid doors.

but we're okay with it been living with it all these years in the beginning it was startling but now we're just used to it. We're like one big happy Supernatural phenomenon family LOL! I can relate to this story how you feel comfortable yet sometimes not! I'm a Believer in the Paranormal realm I've been dealing with it all my life, I really really enjoyed this book it's the first one in a long time that I have read that made me smile instead of hearing the usual malevolent haunting book I like one that shows that not all hauntings are bad. And this book shows that they can be helpful they can also be Angels... thank you for writing your experience... I completely enjoyed it!

interesting

this was ok, the ghost didn't do anything really threatening so i don't get why the family was in such a hurry to get rid of the ghost. in my family, we talk about ghost all the time. we share our experiences so i'm lucky and know i always have people to turn to. I think this book was interesting and the family will have many great stories to pass along.

Unreliable storytellers and bad narration

Narrator seems to think she’s reading a child’s storybook, including doing ridiculous character voices. The facts of the story are quite interesting but the writer immediately jumps to conclusions and assumptions. Also I don’t believe a lot of the quotes from the children. What pre-school child would describe someone as “around 12 or 13” years old? Some parts of the book made me say “Oh **** off!” Out loud because they were so ridiculous in putting 2 and 2 together to make 5. In all, an interesting haunting made much less believable by unreliable storytelling.

A little tedious but interesting

The narration was so sickly sweet to begin that I very nearly returned it straight away. Thankfully it improved although the sound quality is inconsistent in several locations which was irritating.
The story itself is mostly good if a little humdrum, there are lengthy descriptions around particular elements that do not add anything to the actual story so I did find my mind wandering. But overall I quite enjoyed the story.

Great story

I really enjoyed this, it made a change to listen to a haunted story and it have a 'happy' outcome. The narrator was overall quite good but I really could of done without her trying to imitate the children's voices, it was on a par with listening to fingernails down a blackboard.

Enjoyable story, no great shocks

This is no sensationalist horror story but a recount of a family living in a haunted house. As such I enjoyed it. The reason I gave four stars for the performance is because clearly there were some issues requiring changes and so suddenly what appears to be a much deeper woman's voice takes up the narrative to be replaced with the much brighter voice of Katina Kalin a moment later. Is this still Katina with a voice transplant, I doubt, but I found it rather off-putting

The voice of the narrator changes

I really liked this story. It’s easy to listen to and entertaining, a bit creepy at times, not scary but interesting. It doesn’t really build up to anything, it’s just lots of little things that all add up making it a pretty unsettling place for someone to live. It sounds like I’m describing a story that’s pretty flat, but it wasn’t. Any one that likes a ghost story would appreciate this book. The only thing that made it weird and lost a star was that the narrator sometimes sounds deeper, like the voice has been slowed down for a sentence of two. I found myself listening out for these weird moments rather than paying full attention to the story.

Great story but I'm sceptical about it being real.

I have my doubts this story really is one that actually happened. However, the story is good! I like how she tells the story and even thinks to change pitch for voices. I seen people in reviews complain she sounds like she is telling the story to a child, but I like that as just reading text without pitch etc would just be boring to listen to. The narrator makes me enjoy the book. Again a lot of stuff in it makes me doubt it's a real experience, but it makes for a great read/listen if you stop worrying about that and just enjoy the story. I did notice that the voice drastically changed a few times (not for doing voices but sounded like a whole other person was narrating, not even pitch change) which I didn't like much and I took a star for that but I really enjoyed the main narrator!

Past a couple of hours but don’t recommend.

Love a good haunted house story, but this fell well short in many areas.

The main character spent the whole story constantly trying to convince the reader of everything, using insignificant detail, like trying to cover a lie.
Has the author even ever met an actual person before Because they’re inner monologue is written like a shopping list or step-by-step manual. The two-year-old had more airtime, character and insight than the father of the story, Who played the cliche part of the unbelieving blind it’s probably nothing ghost story character

- narrators characterisation was poor borderline annoying.
- edit quality meant that occasionally the recording sounded like that narrator was replaced with someone else entirely, usually toward the end of a sentence, very off putting.

Really enjoyed this book !

I loved all of it but I think the ending was a wonderful way to end this kind of book :)
