Men have been conditioned to be the quintessential "nice guy". They're trained to be overly humble, kind to a fault, and that just "being themselves" is enough to attract and keep the woman of their dreams. Men are told to believe that conventional masculinity is toxic and to put women ahead of their own interests, passions, and purpose. This book exposes the comforting lies you've been told throughout your life for what they really are, enabling you to become a truly authentic alpha who chases excellence and leads a successful passion-filled life.

Story
Our modern society has called for us to “smash the patriarchy”, and the church has not done much better. Instead of telling men how they can hone and refine their aggressive traits, the church has told men that they should aspire to be meek servant-leaders, and when a man shows any signs of independence, he is shown the door. Men are supposed to found households, join brotherhoods, and work toward a mission. God made men to be strong and aggressive risk-takers. This is a feature, not a bug. Foster and Tennant remind us that it’s good to be a man.

Good, modern, civilized Western men today are expected to think like "citizens of the world" - obligated to everyone and no one. Natural, meaningful tribal connections have been substituted with synthetic, disposable consumer identities. Publisher's summary
What does it mean to be a man in the modern world? Throughout history, being a man has meant different things. Maybe being a man was about being a good hunter, or a good soldier, a good businessman, or maybe good with women. Hard Times Create Strong Men examines what it means to be a man in the modern world relative to money, sex, religion, and politics. This audiobook examines what worked and what doesn’t work based on proven history instead of feelings. This audiobook is raw, real, and politically incorrect. It will threaten and challenge your ideas of what it means to be a man and how to better serve your purpose. As the cycles of history prove over and over again, hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, weak men create hard times”.

The first half is pretty good, the second half...
The first half is pretty good and speaks about weak men and how they got that way. The second half is pseudo-intellectual ramblings which border on plagiarism. The logical connections between statements are tenuous, whole passages are lifted from Marcus Aurelius (Mediations) and Deida (Way of the Superior Man), his musings about religion and atheism equate to making the god of the gaps arguement over and over, and he makes broad sweeping generations about history, society, science, etc which have no backing and no basis in reality.
Special mention needs to be made for the performance which is uniquely terrible. Words are mispronounced, he reads song and rap lyrics to the listener in a quasi-singing fashion, repeats and mistakes are not edited out, swallowing/drinking noises are frequent, and he reads every sentence with virtually the same inflection. If the author is as rich as he claims to be throughout the book, he should have dropped a couple bucks to get a professional to read the book.
I liked the book in the beginning and grew to hate it throughout the second half. The second half is flabby, bloated, and he repeats himself frequently. This book needed an editor badly.

Dome good stuff but mostly crap
The Author states at the very beggining that this book if filled with facts. Yet it's hard to find many instances where he doesn't rely solely on opinion and observation. He does have some well put together thoughts. But mostly he's contradictory and inconsistent.

Certainly your Magnum Opus
To the author: encourage every man you coach to read this book first - if they don’t - don’t waste your time on them. Send your dad (you pay expenses) on a trip to a beautiful land to do an extended fast to heal his mind, soul, and body. May he rebound from the legacy he was left from his father - and may he be blessed in his future.
To the potential reader: if you are a man at any age - read this book! You’re life, relationships, and economic well being will benefit. If you are an unmarried woman - read this book. The ingredients of a strong man that are outlined in this book are vital to your future relationship contentment. If you are a married woman, who is not married to a strong man - do not read this book - it will lead to identifying every reason that you are discontent with your man.
Outstanding book, politically incorrect for our times, I LOVED IT!

*NOT FOR THE SENSITIVE*
Given the hate that I'm seeing in the reviews, this book did exactly what it set out to do: Challenge beliefs and tell the cold hard truth about our society and reality. Stefan did a great job with this one, and I found out a lot about the hidden truths behind what it means to be a man today. The ancient stories and references to past civilizations gave this book a really awesome theme. Thoroughly enjoyed it. 5/5

Written by a boy
This will be the first Audible book I return after being a subscriber for two years.
In general I do agree with the concepts and sentiments expressed in this book and I would genuinely like to read something like this.
I think this book falls short because the author hasn't fully integrated the philosophy he expounds. It's a lot of ranting along the lines of "suck it up snowflake" interspersed with quotes by Marcus Aurelius and Ayn Rand.
His concept of manhood is essentially egotism and arrogance and a 'might is right' mentality. While he clearly expresses that weak men are a problem, he does not seem to believe that a real man would understand that there are limits to the 'alpha male' attitude that separate a strong man and a tyrant. By that I mean that the author would likely consider Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Mugabe etc. as 'real men'.
If you are looking for books that help you learn how to act in the world then you would be better off with Jordan Peterson or stoic philosophers such as Marcus Aurelius etc. or Robert Greene's books. Stefan Aarnio is an ant next to these giants.
He could probably do with another decade or so of life experience before writing this book. The book is not well thought out, the best parts are taken from other writers, and the narration can be quite fumbling.
Given all of that, I think that many of the reviews are fake. While some people will enjoy it and get something out of it, it is by no means a for or five star book.

30% useful content, 70% useless preaching
Poor audiobook when you consider just how much potential the title has. It's basically preaching the virtues of Christian beliefs with the backdrop of "I've made the mistake so avoid it" with many of the mistakes being something a masculine man would have never made in the first place. Good guide for a weak Christian boy who lacks complete fortitude. 70% useless for anyone who has already read books on real masculine history and self improvement. The guy was a salesman when he was alive and this is what he is doing throughout - selling his view with sprinklings of legitimate symbols of masculinity such as Marcus Aurelius. I wish I downloaded the kindle so I could have skimmed through it and returned it. Nothing here you wouldn't be able to find in better books.

Really was worth the 16h listen!
Fantastic audible...this really is a 'Bible' for the younger generation. Although I'm familiar with the harsh nature of reality we live in, we cannot ignore the facts that there could also be external factors that are playing a role in the system we live in.
For example, this book talks about leaving the 'EU' as a negative point, however if you actually look in to the formation of the EU, the outstanding debt, the system is flawed itself, and it has not even been around for three decades. Therefore why would you stay in a broken system?
Other points such as the analogy of comparing the Roman Empire to the USA, more specifically the analogy of 'Muslims' taking over the 'West'. This book does not take in to consideration that it is because of the US constant invasion of the middle east, that there are so many refugees who have nowhere else to go. Therefore, your leaders, (Government) are to be blamed.
Overall, good book, but like with everything, don't take everything you read as a 'fact', do your own research on the topic.
Lastly, not every soul want's this 'Hardship' life, remember we are born in to this world without a choice, therefore you cannot blame some individuals who struggle.

A must for any man
Great book and really opens your eyes to how mankind and men in general have become. How toxic feminism and the western world has pretty much made it a sin to be a white Christian straight male.
If you need to find your place and the tools you need to succeed in this world then either buy the book or listen to the audio book.

For those who wish to live intentionally and to their full potential
The book I’ve been waiting for without knowing it.
It’s hard to articulate the disquiet one feels around the topic of modern masculinity and what society has to say about it. Stefan Aarnio lays it out superbly. He explains the issues, outlines the consequences of our flawed thinking and provides clear leadership and direction for men who seek to live as strong men, leaders and shapers of the future.
A must read for those who are over the bullshit and seek truth.

Insightful BUT
This is an insightful book. My concern however is that in chapter 4 the author claims to be an expert in human nature however he makes sweeping general statements about human behaviour and belief systems with disregard to the varied systems in society that form traditions and cultures.
The book presents the candid insight on particular issues that relate to the male gender however, the vulgarity of his marks does not aid his points but highlights weaknesses in the right use of the English language.
This then limits to whom I can share this book with as the men I know detest bad language. It is a note worthy book to read as it shares a unique male perspective.

16 hours of pure gold.
I just finished listening to this at the age of 15. I couldn't imagine growing up into adulthood not knowing the things this book taught me. I will listen to it again and again until I feel like that the teachings of this book is a part of who I am. Thanks so much Stefan Aarnio.

Unfinishable
I am disappointed by this book as it has some ingredients to be a book I'd thoroughly enjoy (Reflection on current times, lessons from Marcus Aurelius, examples from history) however it falls short in so many ways and I don't think I'll be able to make it to the end, which is rare. There are far too few examples of hard men throughout history and like The Way of the Superior Man, I cannot relate to how they describe women. I am fairly well travelled and the women both Authors describe in the books are nothing like the Irish women I know and have grown up with, nothing like French women I know in my life now, nothing like Spanish women, Dutch women, and even many American women. Really really disappointing and if I was a younger more naive man I think this book would do more harm than good.

What most men today need to hear!
So much truth packed in one book, this should be a book students had to read in school. Although the fluency of his reading isn't perfect, it doesn't take away the impact of his words. I recommend to any male, blue pilled or already red, this book can give you the extra you need to live as a man without excuses.

Touching
Deeply thoughtful.
This book will be an irrefutable classic. Aarnio has taken time and extreme effort to sculpt and deliver this book.
As a man this book is a kick in the guts. Right where we need it. A reminder of our historical masculine spirit. A challenge. An inspiration. Everyman will be touched deeply by this message.
One may not agree with all the points - but being opened minded, listening to others ideas and thinking critically is inherently manly.
All young men should be exposed to these chapters. It’s a refreshing reminder of the harsh realities of human life. But there is hope.
Don’t play ignorance and pretend these aren’t real issues.
Aarnio narrates the book perfectly. It is an easy listen. One that I will read and re listen to many times over.
Do yourself a favour- listen/read this book and past it onto as many men as you can.

A few good concepts interspersed with nonsense
I sort of knew going into this book that it was going to be a tough listen, but I endeavoured to try nonetheless. Unfortunately, I got about 3/4 of the way through before the nonsense finally overcame me.
We'll start with the good. There is undoubtedly a crisis of masculinity in the Western world and there is a major issue with physical, mental, emotional and spiritual weakness in men. This is largely systemic and caused by the erosion of institutions over the past 50 years. Aarnio addresses this well and provides some useful tools for tackling this on an individual level.
The section on money is also very good. Aarnio clearly has authority in this area as a successful entrepreneur.
Now the bad.. oh boy. The remaining 3 sections of the book are essentially a collection of "I think"s and poor understanding of history and sociology. It is nearly impossible to take his advice on women seriously as he has no authority in the area and his understanding of homosexuality is even more wishy-washy.
In the section on religion, he talks about lost faith and then spends an hour talking about communism and how education is worthless.
Overall, I'd say skip this. There are far better resources to nurture your masculinity in a healthy and productive way than listening to a jaded ultra-conservative spew out ill-informed opinions for 18 hours.

A stellar and motivating listen
4.5 stars for this beneficial and worthwhile book, as the title infers, the male reader will resonate with this practical man bible and the wakeup call.
So, for the disorientated, confused, or demotivated, this book will aid in reclaiming masculinity, through a strived for, justified and necessary purpose. However, be warned, initial discomfort will be met.
As the author articulates, this discomfort arises due to a persistent, socially engineered effort to prevent a male’s purpose in life and was detailed in various societal situations at length. Awareness to these situations created the discomfort.
Thankfully though, this book highlighted workarounds, by highlighting and mitigating the external noise, distractions, and associated mindlessness, then countered with a journey towards reclaimed manhood. Concerns were alleviated, and an educational journey underpinned by focus, demanding work, and professional dedication to manhood, was outlined.
This journey to manhood was richly detailed with relevant information, and inspiration was plentiful throughout. As was the enthusiasm towards this book being recommended to male friends and colleagues.
Another insight was the direct effect on mood and behaviours, whether influenced through famous quotes, chapter themes or the fact the author had practiced what he preached. Through his story and education, of highlighting the signal amongst the external noise, and employing laser like focus to accomplish goals, were poignant and stimulating.
The author covers such vast topics to encompass this reclaiming of man hood, and numerous themes broke down to their components.
Those themes were hard-hitting, with no nonsense. The author cut to the chase, identified the problem, then elaborated. Refreshingly, no stone remained unturned and controversial topics had precedence. This featured throughout and should resonate with most readers, particularly, in the current (2022) woke madness and agenda fuelled society.
Often, throughout the listen, emphatic head nods of agreement to the author’s observations and hard-hitting truths occurred. For instance, how the author forecasted the unbalanced societal scales due to political correctness back in 2018.
If only he could have observed the dogfight and wasteland media the media have prioritised in recent years. RIP.
This was also reinforced through the author’s observations of the perilous age of tolerance which had infected the modern age. Indicated by these soft natured, tiptoeing, frightened and uncertain modern males. This has been disadvantageous! As the author argued, this undermined and impeded male’s proclivity to strive towards ambition, and consequently, contradicted the male, hard-wired DNA of protection and providing for their family, tribe, and community.
Crucially, none of this was heresy or emotionally based arguments. These were strengthened through research, results and proved throughout history. The historical accounts were excellent, and readers will appreciate the historical references to better understand and support their futures.
The author himself had stumbled down a similar treacherous path, then found himself but this only achieved through studying the greats and their histories. This motivated his entrepreneurial path, where he went on to owning a successful real estate business. He was a mentor to employees and thankfully shared his wisdom, as he himself wonderfully champions, ‘this book is rated R, for relevant.’
While this book was excellent for all males, young adult males will find most value. Through the author’s impressive foresight and his ability to utilise history to project the future. He detailed the current landscape, where far too many people would rather be popular than discuss the truth. Contributing to the woke filled agendas, causing only more confusion and drawbacks, and with the outcome of poisoned young men’s minds. Combine this with the environment of, ‘we live in a society which is openly hostile to men.’ Consequently, this negative concoction, resulted in disorientated and aimless young men who reflected nothing of the strong men of previous generations.
This ‘strong men’ statement was harped on numerous times throughout the book, and each time with a different angle of research, complimented by historical examples. This content was confronting but relevant, and was key for the necessary mindset and behaviour change. As the author quoted from Gene Simmons,
‘The reality is, it is a jungle out there, young men need to be better informed, and information gathering has become difficult.’ However, through information, comes preparation and this book is the tool to enable that.
Potentially, men can ignore the loud screaming social media voices, hollow of reason and logic, and instead use reality to their advantage.
Ideally, if this book shaped and motivated men to be strong men, with a purpose and a disciplined work focus. With distractions such as porn mitigated, and a relationship with a woman prioritised and established. This then provides a foundation towards building a family, and this would be an outstanding legacy for the author.
So, absolutely, this book is recommended to all males, and particularly young males. The awareness the author had in numerous disciplines, coupled with the fundamentals to promote masculinity and the re-education on the strong men being necessary for society, was outstanding.
Personally, this book will promote behaviour changes, with intention to learn and absorb the book’s points for future healthy discussions.

Great book, relevant and straight to the point
The question of what it means to be a strong man is something I have been dealing for a while now. The first book that I got into for that topic was the way of the superior man, then the rational male and now this book by Stefan. I love how he integrated many different elements like the history of men, politics, spirituality, psychology and more .. maybe my favourite book so far and highly recommend for any man or women to get a clear understanding of how important good man are for a better world and how we can become or create better men.
Thank you for this book, great listen.

Eye Opening Book on The Modern Age
Hard Times Create Strong Men by Stefan Aarnio is an excellent book that should be experienced by as many men as possible.
Great in an audiobook format (in my opinion I had a better experience listenin than reading it), Aarnio reads the book well with a lot of passion.
This book shows our modern age in a new light, full of weak and lost men and women, misguided by the society into rejecting their masculine and feminie virtues and submitting to instant pleasure.
This book offers a perspective on how you should live in the modern age and the book gives steps in how to be the man you really are.
The author gives great examples of his experiences and quotes relavent sources that relate perfectly to the themes.
The author does carry on a little to the end but his points are understandable and is only a very slight drawback to a book so full of eye opening advice and information, presented in such a clear and understanderble way.
4.5/5
