While the notion that “happiness can found within oneself” has recently become popular, Buddhism has taught for thousands of years that every person is a Buddha, or enlightened being, and has the potential for true and lasting happiness. Through real-life examples, the authors explain how adopting this outlook has positive effects on one’s health, relationships, and career and gives new insights into world environmental concerns, peace issues, and other major social problems.

Just as I Am is my truth. It is me, plain and unvarnished, with the glitter and garland set aside. Here, I am indeed Cicely, the actress who has been blessed to grace the stage and screen for six decades. Yet I am also the church girl who once rarely spoke a word. I am the teenager who sought solace in the verses of the old hymn for which this book is named. I am a daughter and mother, a sister, and a friend. I am an observer of human nature and the dreamer of audacious dreams.

Is there more to Buddhism than sitting in silent meditation? Is modern Buddhism relevant to the problems of daily life? Does it empower individuals to transform their lives? Or has Buddhism become too detached, so still and quiet that the Buddha has fallen asleep? Waking the Buddha tells the story of the Soka Gakkai International, the largest, most dynamic Buddhist movement in the world today - and one that is waking up and shaking up Buddhism so it can truly work in ordinary people's lives.

The most on 𝑃𝑢𝑟𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑒 𝑎𝑢𝑑𝑖𝑜 𝑏𝑜𝑜𝑘 for me! I too Sing healing... 99.99% of the life of Tina Turner has been of my own. I’m so thankful she makes my life real and unrestricted without judgment. Through all my therapies in life never has my self doubt appeared resolved. Knowing now feeling unloved and unwanted cascades a negative curtain in life most wouldn’t understand unless they have lived through it. Psychologist cautioned me about sharing my story because it’s to sad for others. I thought, “how am I expected to live it, if most can’t bear to listen to it?”
I am thankful for chanting and African Spirituality. I hope that IFÁ will make it to the 𝐵𝑒𝑦𝑜𝑛𝑑 stage. As a Multiple Sclerosis warrior and Hereditary Pancreatitis survivor I am gracefully journeying to my awakening.

What a treasure!
I might not be super objective because Tina has been my idol/mentor since I was 11 (I froze when I heard her co-writer tell the story about his discovery of Tina - I thought I had a unique story :) ), but this is a truly well written book, amazing source of knowledge, and a once in a lifetime opportunity to get to know Tina on a deeper level. I tend to question things, so having my mentor confirm the things I knew but wasn't completely convinced of, was a gift from the universe. She answered my questions, she gave me permissions, her message was powerful and received. Couldn't be more grateful for this book!

Good but not in Audible form
I was so disappointed that this book was not narrated by Tina - or at least by an actor who could capture Tina's raspy sound. That was a big turn off for me for listening, I should have bought the hard back instead.
I really enjoyed her explanation of Buddhist concepts. This was the book that the members of my book club chose, they none of them had read her previous book - Love, Tina. That book was more of a biography and this book was focused on her spiritual journey. My book club was hoping that this book would have had more biography AND the spirituality. If I had not read the previous book I would have left the same way.

A deeply satisfying read from a hero of mine
I loved this book. Tina Turner’s story is intertwined with beautiful quotes and her teachings on chanting and Buddhism. What better way is there to learn about both? I find her an excellent teacher and a role model. I am ready to start a chanting practice. I feel inspired and grateful.
