“A rollicking tale.” —The Washington Post *“Propulsive.” —Associated Press * “Wild, smart, energetic.” —Los Angeles Times * “Brilliant and effervescent.” —NPR

From the #1 bestselling author of
The Glass Castle, the instant New York Times bestseller a “rip-roaring, action-packed” (The New York Times) novel about an indomitable young woman in prohibition-era Virginia.

Sallie Kincaid is the daughter of the biggest man in a small town, the charismatic Duke Kincaid. Born at the turn of the 20th century into a life of comfort and privilege, Sallie remembers little about her mother who died in a violent argument with the Duke. By the time she is just eight years old, the Duke has remarried and had a son, Eddie. While Sallie is her father’s daughter, sharp-witted and resourceful, Eddie is his mother’s son, timid and cerebral. When Sallie tries to teach young Eddie to be more like their father, her daredevil coaching leads to an accident, and Sallie is cast out.

Nine years later, she returns, determined to reclaim her place in the family. That’s a lot more complicated than Sallie expected, and she enters a world of conflict and lawlessness. Sallie confronts the secrets and scandals that hide in the shadows of the Big House, navigates the factions in the family and town, and finally comes into her own as a bold, sometimes reckless bootlegger.

“You’ll fall in love with Sallie on the very first page and keep rooting for her all the way through to the last” (Good Housekeeping) in this thrilling read that “goes down easy…like the forbidden whisky that defines the life of Sallie Kincaid” (Associated Press).

Coming of age in Appalachia
After listening to Jeannette Walls narrate her groundbreaking memoir, The Glass Castle, it comes as no surprise that hers is the perfect voice to perform this vivid coming-of-age story. Set in Appalachia before and during Prohibition, the novel’s central character, Sallie Kincaid, has a freewheeling and powerful father, the “Duke.” He’s a man she thinks can “hang the moon.” Yes, her father is a force, but so is Sallie. It’s an epic tale full of tangled family bonds, explosive romantic relationships, hucksters, and opportunists. Against the odds, Sallie navigates it all and becomes one of the most memorable characters I’ve encountered in a long time. —Tricia F. , Audible Editor

Book was a little to slow at first got better towards the end. Felt like it was too detailed at first and then not detailed enough. Would recommend to people that like American historical fiction. Wanted more from the ending.

Very interesting storyline. A wonderful blend of history and fiction. The author/narrator made the story come alive.

Hope springs from truth and hardship.

Not as absorbing as other of her books, which I throughly enjoyed. Still an adequate family story

Somewhat disappointed

Is that only me or this is the story of Henry the 8th, king of England and his first 3 wives and his children in a different setting?
The story is entertaining but to my opinion it is more like a recipe with lots of ingredients in a pot that are not mixed and cooked together very well. I think “glass castle” written by same author is a better book

Resemblance with Henry the 8th family story

Great imagery, beautifully narrated. A little more wandering than some of her other books, but just as enjoyable.

Another great Jeanette Walls book!
