A Literary Masterpiece!

I loved everything about this exquisitely written book, and recommend it highly to all.

And, while I do so wish that the editors and producers at Real Audio Books had taken the time and care to properly edit out the few narrative blips present in this audiobook, I feel Ms Small’s voice, tone and cadence were perfect for this work.

Entrancing story, beautifully written

The prose was poetic. The threads of the story were deftly woven together. I appreciate the amount of research on the history of the Tidewater area.

The writing is poetic. The story deeply sad, complex and satisfying. The characters are memorable and the book pulls you deeply in.

Great story - abrupt ending

So many aspects of this novel were just so powerful, and perhaps the abrupt, ending with meant to mirror what life was like for the enslaved. There could very easily be Part 2.

Fantastic

This a fabulous book, Beautifully written. Heartbreaking and brutal. The passing of time and shifting perspectives moves the story along seamlessly.
