Publisher's Summary

“Anne Lamott is my Oprah.” (Chicago Tribune)

Start the new year with The New York Times best seller from the author of Almost Everything and Bird by Bird, a powerful exploration of mercy and how we can embrace it.

"Mercy is radical kindness," Anne Lamott writes in her enthralling and heartening book Hallelujah Anyway. It's the permission you give others - and yourself - to forgive a debt, to absolve the unabsolvable, to let go of the judgment and pain that make life so difficult.

In Hallelujah Anyway: Rediscovering Mercy, Lamott ventures to explore where to find meaning in life. We should begin, she suggests, by "facing a great big mess, especially the great big mess of ourselves." It's up to each of us to recognize the presence and importance of mercy everywhere - "within us and outside us, all around us" - and to use it to forge a deeper understanding of ourselves and more honest connections with each other. While that can be difficult to do, Lamott argues that it's crucial, as "kindness towards others, beginning with myself, buys us a shot at a warm and generous heart, the greatest prize of all."

Full of Lamott's trademark honesty, humor, and forthrightness, Hallelujah Anyway is profound and caring, funny and wise - a hopeful book of hands-on spirituality.

Anne is my new teacher and hero

I was blindly searching for some level of direction after wandering 14 years in sobriety. Getting sober was crucial but there had to be more. Something beyond the rooms and staying stuck in a stagnant story that no longer serves. Anne has the gift of delivering something beyond "the same old story." She shines the flashlight on truth as it relates to the human condition. I feel like I've met a soul sister.

How I love Anne Lamott, this book no different

but... sadly, Ms. Lamott shouldn't read her own work. I love seeing her speak in person and she is absolutely brilliant. However, in the audiobook format her narration is too monotone. The words are lovely, moving and inspirational.

Mercy as learned through experience

This book is full of stories from start too finish. No detail of what mercy is is given . The
reader is left to decipher this on their own from the stories. I did enjoy Lamont's ability to apply scripture of old to today's life experiences...something that religion too often misses today.
