Publisher's Summary

The New York Times best seller - part of the expanded universe based on the award-winning video game series Halo!

It's 2524. Harvest is a peaceful, prosperous farming colony on the very edge of human-controlled space. But humanity has unknowingly trespassed on holy ground - straying into the path of the aggressive, theocratic empire known as the Covenant. What begins as a chance encounter between an alien privateer and a human freighter soon catapults all of mankind into a struggle for its very existence.

But humanity is also currently locked in a bitter civil war of its own: the Insurrection. With resources strained to the breaking point, the ultimate survival of Harvest’s citizens falls to a squad of battle-weary UNSC Marines and their inexperienced colonial militia trainees. In this unlikely group of heroes, one will stand above the rest - a young Marine staff sergeant named Avery Johnson....

I enjoyed having two narrators for this story

I have read the books for this series and the audiobook hold up quite well. I like how they had two narrators, a male and a female. I think it would be a good idea to have the all male voices by one and all female voices by another. if you listen you may understand what I mean. Overall this was a good book.

Much better that expected.

I was originally turned away by some of the reviews of this book, but I bit the bullet and decided to listen. I'm glad I did, as it is a great experience into the old expanded universe of Halo. With a plethora of new and recognizable characters both human and especially Covenant, this made for quite a good listen. A Covenant Hurragok (Engineer) as one of the many main characters makes for a unique perspective compared to others such as a Sangheli or human. The story and plot itself wasn't perfect. as it jumped around a bit akd struggled a bit to stay on track, but I found myself enjoying the background information of the characters (again, especially the Covenant) being told much more interesting than the actual plot itself. The writing style wasn't anything too special, and there was a bit of "male power fantasy" vibe in some parts, particularly in the (mild spoiler) somewhat forced and out of place sex scene right at the end of the book. Thankfully it did not detract from the rest of the book too much. All in all, pretty good. I would recommend to anyone who's a fan of Halo and already knows about some of it's lore.

Amazing

I loved how it told the story of a Marine. And the story of a covenant soldier. Honestly I was very into the kit tar shipmaster and her mate before they were killed.

Hard to follow

While this story was interesting at some points, I just found it really hard to follow. The back story of Avery was nice to know, but I feel like the only bits that I will retain out of it is the ending. This story was actually much better at telling the story of the Covenant.

Very interesting start of the war

This book focuses on the first contact with the Covenant on Harvest. Other books make reference to it, but this retcons the whole they just showed up and Glassed everything. and made a MUCH more compelling story. Definitely worth a read to understand how the conflict with the Covenant started.

Difficult to follow along

Might have just been me, but I really had a tough time following along with my the story. I got about 2 hours in and actually restarted the book because I realized I missed a lot of information. I just couldn’t get into it.

The best of all the Halo books

In my opinion, this is not only the best Halo audio book, but the best of all the Halo books. Holter Graham does an excellent job of reading the story, giving each character their own distinct, believable voice, unlike some other narrators (cough cough Scott Brick cough cough). They even got Jen Taylor AKA Cortana to voice one of the characters! As for the story itself, it begins almost like a crime-noir novel, with everyone's favourite marine Avery Johnson caught in a moral struggle in his career in the UNSC. As the story progresses, he visibly develops as a character and overcomes his doubts of himself in order to become a better soldier and a better person. The other characters are likeable, including the Covenant characters, who provide a fascinating insight into motivations of their Great Journey. Overall, this is a must read/listen for any Halo fan.

And I thought Scott Brick was good.

This has been one of the most enjoyable Halo entries so far. I thought Scott Brick was the uncontested master of the Halo audiobook library but Holter Graham delivers a great performance, bringing each character to life, I especially liked Byrne's Irish accent. This along with several other audiobook releases of earlier Halo novels completely passed me by. Even if you have read the novel I would suggest giving this a listen.

Great Story.

As a First for Audio books personally, I have to say this was one of the best book/story experiences I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. The voice acting is excellent, the story stands out as possibly even one of the best books I would have read, the character development just as well as the plot is thrilling and i enjoyed every moment.

More of a beloved character

Contact Harvest gives a great look into the opening days of the Human-Covenant war. The book gives some great backstory to characters from the games, the best which is the books protagonist. It's filled with good action as well as character moments, a very worthwhile read or listen for any Halo fan looking for more content outside of the games

A new love for the Covenant

A scene where an alien picks up it's prescription and gets stuck in rush hour traffic on the way home
