Publisher's Summary

Foreword by Jane Fonda

A timeless collection of philosophies from renaissance performer and the world’s most famous shape-shifter RuPaul, whose sage outlook has created an unprecedented career for more than 35 years. GuRu illustrates the concept of building the life you want from the outside in and the inside out.

"You’re born naked, and the rest is drag."

As someone who has deconstructed life’s hilarious facade, RuPaul has broken "the fourth wall" to expand on the concept of mind, body, and spirit. This unique perspective has allowed RuPaul to break the shackles of self-imposed limitations, but listener beware, this is a daily practice that requires diligence and touchstones to keep you walking in the sunshine of the spirit. Once you’re willing to look beyond the identity that was given to you, a hidden world of possibilities will open its doors.

Throughout the history of humans on this planet, there’ve always been shaman, seers, and mediums who are able to interpret both high and low frequencies and remind humans to look beyond the surface for the truth of who we really are. And who we really are is an extension of the power that created the universe (aka: God in drag). FYI: Most people are not willing to hear or accept that.

That is RuPaul’s secret for success, not only in show business but in all aspects of life, especially in navigating the emotional landmines that inhibit most sweet, sensitive souls.

If you think this audiobook is just about "doing drag", you are sorely mistaken because for RuPaul, drag is merely a device to deactivate the identity-based ego and allow space for the unlimited.

Do not purchase

This is not suited for audio. They just talk about pictures in the book that you can’t see. Huuuuge disappoints.

Truly GuRulicious!

I originally pre-ordered this book, and then when it came out, to my suprise, its a short one- only 1 Hr and 15 minutes, so I knew it was more of an essay than a book, per-say, but Ru unleashes his wisdom onto the world of audiobook readers, as he always does from his TV Show, to DragCon, etc.

I am and always have/will be a huge fan of Mother Ru, and rightfully so, who else can give such clear perspective on decades of learning things about how to give stereotypes and gender the middle finger? I consider myself fortunate to read the lessons he divulges in this quaint, precise mini-memoir of knowledge, because from everyone that I've seen on YouTube or interviews where people say they 'encounter' Ru, they always describe his energy as 'Larger than Life'..he has that thing, like Anna Nicole Smith or Cher, that certain..."je ne sais quoi".

Ru opens by giving us the tea straight up, served piping hot, gives you really solid advice on how to perceive yourself, your soul, and how to ignore those who wish us harm- I would only be so lucky to build a life that closely resembles his, because he's inspirational on so many levels, and there will never be another quite like him...her...let's just say Mother.

Rupaul is such an inspiring figure of our time! His wisdom and deep kindness coupled with a large dollop if shade, challenges us all to step our pussy up. Love you, Ru!

Not Great as an Audio Book Experience Alone

The biggest problem with this book as an audio experience is the fact that there is no companion PDF by design despite how much of the text makes reference to photos in the original book. I had not noticed that the synopsis of this work made mention of this as most other biographies of this nature tend to include a PDF by default so this was out of the norm.

In terms of actual content the work ends up feeling a little disorganized. It's merely a collection of seemingly random RuPaul quotes strung together with references to photos that might have given the book more structure.

I love RuPaul and he does have a lot of great things to share. But admittedly we've already heard most of them on his various television shows and this book just puts them all together in a stream of consciousness flow.

It's an okay book but it could have been a lot better.

Disappointed

I've always liked and followed RuPaul but this was a very short book with not enough facts.
I wanted to know more about how he rose from his past to the present; can't do that in one hour.
Disappointed.

I'm a fan, so this is biased...I See You

I enjoy Ru's isms and general overall outlook on life and how it parallels with my personal perspective. Ru and I met only once on a Thanksgiving many years ago in San Diego. That holiday we play Charades and on his team I guess, Swan Lake within the first second of him gesturing. At that time I did not realize how similarly he and I think. Much growth, loss, triumph, pain and joy later, I'm introduced to RPDR and binge watch it because I am behind 10 seasons (always late to the newest pop culture craze). And thus Becoming a fan of the Emmy Award Winning reality contest. From the show I come to know Ru not only as an entertainter, Supermodel of the World, but equally as a shrewd marketing businessman yet genuinely thoughtful leader to the men and women who compete. However, it was from the Oprah interview that I come to respect Ru as a creative and seeker. From that I believe, OK this fella gets it and there was a strong enough connection compelling me to listen to his book. We are more than products of our environment, and yet, we are still products of it. Everything and nothing, the constant push and pull. There are unseen energies, forces and (objectively speaking)... magic. This book will not reveal to you the secrets to pure perception but with that in that way of thinking, of dropping all pretense and opening your mind, can lead to self awareness, success, and/or happiness in whichever way you choose to apply it. We are intrinsically magical animals. Some tools for a happier and more complete self are a good thing and a public service too. I see you, Ru, and as One of the Whole, I get it. Question everything and don't seek the answers but trust your senses and instinct. Existence is a book in another language, I perceive the book with my senses and don't understand it. I don't need to understand the writing to appreciate the realness, the weight, the number of pages or the smell of the paper. I nod my head with a(n un)knowing eye and gently chuckle at the big joke. Reality is an illusion. Perception is reality.

Meh...

Being a huge follower of RuPaul, I had high hopes for this book, but it was not nearly what I expected. It was minimally insightful, seemingly disjointed, and not what I hoped for from the glamazon I love so much.

Feel Ripped-Off by RuPaul Inc.

I'm a fan of RuPaul, and this "book" was a huge disappointment. Barely over an hour of repetitious, recycled wisdom that any RuPaul fan will have heard many, many times before. I understand there are many photos in the book, so perhaps buying the Kindle edition would have been more satisfying. I'm considering requesting a refund from Audible.
