Live...laugh...read...with New York Times best-selling author Christie Craig....

"...Fans of Janet Evanovich should check [Craig] out." (Parkersburg News and Sentinel on Divorced, Desperate and Delicious)

Macy Tucker was five years old when her beloved grandfather dropped dead in his spaghetti. At 12, her father left his family in the dust. At 25, her husband gave his secretary a pre-Christmas bonus in bed, and Macy gave him the boot. To put things lightly, men have been undependable.

That's why dating's off the menu. Macy is focused on putting herself through law school - which means being the delivery girl for Papa's Pizza. But cheesier than her job is her pie-eyed brother, who just recently escaped from prison to protect his new girlfriend. And hotter than Texas toast is the investigating detective. Proud, sexy...inflexible, he's a man who would kiss her just to shut her up. But Jake Baldwin's a protector as much as a dish. And when he gets his man - or his woman - Macy knows it's for life.

Fun Read

Funny entertaining read, with different twist than the norm. I would read another of her books.

a solid story

I really enjoyed this story. I thought the story line engaging and the characters likeable. the crime storyline was refreshing to me , and it wasnt simply another predictable romance.

Tame - Too many downers for supposed rom-com

The book summary and critic reviews promised all the things I love: cop romance, humor, action, quirky characters, and a crime mystery. Although all of those things were present in this book, they exist in in lukewarm fashion, making the a fine, but ultimately forgettable listen. I recommend this as part of the free Audible Escapes subscription, but would not pay to keep the book.

For a rom-com, there are a lot of downer plots and backstories- which are fine in a 3 minute country song, but painful in a nearly 11.5 hour listen. Macy’s grandpa died in front of her, dad was an abusive alcoholic, brother is a criminal, ex cheated on her, boss propositions her, and she’s scraping by as a pizza delivery gal, is socially and sexually inhibited, and has a convict threatening to rape and kill her. Jake’s dad died from cancer, his ex cheated on him with his own brother ... and he’s closed off, incapable of trusting women, and sees anyone’s assistance as pity for him as a charity case. Then there’s the whole plot of Macy’s brother Billie, in prison for a crime he was barely part of, forever making bad life decisions, possibly being a fool for love, and facing death from a fellow convict or the law. Then there’s Macy’s mom, whose basically been a weepy, mopey doormat for the past decade. That’s a whole lotta baggage and men being awful to women for the listener to overcome and get to the feel good, rom-com, HEA parts.

This book is 70% downer, 15% crime story, 10% molasses slow romance, 4% sweet humor, and 1% sex. There are some fun parts, from Elvis the cat to grandma nan, perpetual ball busting, and bacon worship, but there just wasn’t enough to counter act the downer parts. Considering the author tracks not one, but three HEAs, I expected a lot more romance. In addition to Macy/Jake, there’s two other complete (albeit equally bland) romances involving Billie/Ellie and Hal/Macy’s mom. But, aside from kisses, all the romance happens off-screen and gets only indirectly referenced until Macy and Jake finally get together 9.5 hrs into this 11.5 hr book (ch30). When they finally have their two sex scenes, they are relatively short and more sweet than sizzling.

If you borrow this book, I recommend speeding up the narration to 1.4x. If you want something similar in theme, I recommend the following cop romances that are better written, depending on which cop to romance ratio you’re looking for:
One for the Money (Stephanie Plum series) - more fun crime caper than romance. (I liked the written book more than the Audible narrated one, but bump the speed up and the Audible one is decent)
Jed has to Die - sharper, funnier crime and romance
Hot Cop - funnier, sexier, and way more explicit romance with no crime drama, just the hot cop (seriously, although I liked this one, the nooky is dirty!)

Funny

Actually read this before. The narrators were really good. I think I laughed just as much. But I still think the heroine is a little stupid for constantly putting herself in danger. But the humor makes up for it!

So much fun!

Suspense with humor and snarky banter. Perfect, reminds me a lot of Rock Chick books.

Just what I wanted for my next read

Perfectly imperfect characters, broken but likable. Good sex scenes, and enough suspense getting to that point. Good balance of sexual and emotional content. Love Courtney Patterson as a narrator!

So sad.

Great start but….how many ‘pop tents’, knee jobs (what the hell is that?) etc.’. Sex is a cheap way to write. Also boring, disgusting. Actor was amazing. That’s the best I can say.

Very good steamy romance

This was an older published book. If I had seen that I probably would not have gotten it. This is the first book that I’ve read from this author. To my enjoyment it was very good. It made me laugh it had a hint of suspense in there. I took a little off of the rating secondary to slight dragging of the story 3/4 of the way through - but slight. Would definitely read another one of this author.

Really cute story

I enjoyed this story. I usually do not choose romance books. Got to be more to it, suspense, mystery. This fit the bill, likeable characters, great narration. Loved the ending!

Entertaining!

This is my first time reading this author and what a delight! This story was funny, suspenseful and romantic. I loved how Christie Craig took the time to build up the relationship and the tension, and the sexual detail was enough without being a how-to manual. Rather, it was tasteful and not the focus of the story – the emotion was. And it got me good.

The main and secondary characters were three dimensional and loveable. The hero’s work partner is the main character in a delightful novella-length story, THE COP WHO STOLE CHRISTMAS, and it is equally charming.

I thoroughly enjoyed the performance of the new-to-me-narrator, Courtney Patterson. I just have one question because I don’t know any Texans: Do Texans really say “wadn’t” instead of “wasn’t”? It happened so much here. It distracted me a bit, but the narration was otherwise excellent, so I had to accept that is correct pronunciation.

I recommend this novel.
