Critic Reviews

"Quite simply the funniest book you'll read all year...easily as funny, as self-deprecating and as wordly-wise as The Moon's a Balloon by David Niven...it's like Tom and Jerry written by a Cockney Roddy Doyle on Prozac. But funnier." ( GQ Online on Going Off Alarming)
"Rattles along at the same delightful and dizzying pace as its predecessor.... Baker loves a tale told at his own expense and they come thick and fast. He writes like he speaks, with hyperactive garrulity and a rhetorical flourish...there is something about Baker in full flow that is affirming." ( Daily Telegraph on Going Off Alarming)

Great book, poor audio editing

Like all of Danny Baker’s books this is fantastic - he is a great story teller.

However, there are dozens of occasions within the audio recording where Danny restarts sentences and these have not been edited out.

Glorious glorious Candyman

Oh I have just had the loveliest few weeks listening to all three books. It’s been like having Danny back on the radio in my drive home. Have never read or listened to a better written or performed biog. Stands up and applauds. Thank you Candyman.

Perfect

Ah Danny, I love you mate. Of the 3 volumes this is perhaps the saddest but Danny comes through it in such a down to earth way that you feel churlish for breaking down in tears. I love you Danny.

Love it

There is a very different feel to this third book as it covers the death of the author's much loved dad and his own battle with cancer. There are still lots of hilarious anecdotes but the passing of Spud is dealt with with great tenderness while his description of his cancer treatment pulls no punches. I have enjoyed all three books in this series, perhaps because he describes so well a world I also grew up in. As he says he remembers everything but I seem to have forgotten so much so it is great to be reminded of a different time.

Get it NOW - absolutely amazing

I have listened to well over 100 audiobooks and this is by far one of the best I’ve listened to.

Danny Baker is one of my favourite presenters / writers so I am biased but trust me, the way Danny describes his stories is like nectar to the ears.

A wonderful range of emotions are felt through this book, mostly laughing.

If you’ve read this far it means you’ve not bought it yet, procrastinate no more, you’ll be glad you did.

Funny and sad at same time!

Danny reads this with the same glusto and enthusiasm as his radio shows. Made me laugh out loud on the occasions he describes his father. Then describes his cancer treatment in a honest and straight forward way.
A bit ‘name droppy’ but that’s the only downside.
Loved this book. Loved the narrative and would recommend it highly.

A great story

An excellently told and hugely funny series of stories. Very well done Danny. Have not enjoyed listening to something so much ever!. Hsd to stop my car more than once, from being unable to see for crying with laughter.
You have brought back so many memories of my own youth of growing up in London (albeit a couple of years behind you).
Cheers Buddy

What a rattling great yarn!

Mr Baker, you have written yet another stunning book (and gave it great gusto in the audio version) I truly believe that we would have been great chums in another life.

Laugh out loud funny and searingly honest. Your last book accompanied me to Wrexham and back and this one has been with me in the car from London to Manchester and back again. Thank you.

One footnote in response to a few comments about the “edit”. I counted 4 occasions where a brief “dry run is audible” before the finished delivery. Maybe 20 seconds in total! More than acceptable over 9 hours of content! Don’t touch it, it adds a certain charm and authenticity to proceedings.

Everyone should have your 3 biographies as the benchmark to how things should be done. Best of luck and I look forward to book number Four!

outstanding writing and Performance

this book is expertly written and brilliantly performed by Danny Baker. The stories are expertly weaved and so brilliantly illustrated with excellent description. Section about cancer is as expected, very dark indeed full stop I just about made it through these chapters but Danny's amazing ability to bring things to life provides captivating listening. Highly recommended as part of the Trio of these books

Triple score

This is the third autobiography from Danny and doesn't fail to draw you into his world of madcap adventures and great love for his family and friends. As expected its peppered with the up's and down's of his career, his diagnosis and recovery from cancer and charming hilarious anecdotes from his beloved father Spud.
As an audio book you feel especially like Danny is in the room regaling you with his tales. A brilliant joy of a book.
More please Danny :-)
