Publisher's summary

The author of the Sunday Times best-selling Outlander series returns with a brand new novel in the epic tale.

The past may seem the safest place to be...but it is the most dangerous time to be alive....

Jamie Fraser and Claire Randall were torn apart by the Jacobite Rising in 1743, and it took them 20 years to find each other again. Now the American Revolution threatens to do the same.

It is 1779 and Claire and Jamie are at last reunited with their daughter, Brianna, her husband Roger and their children on Fraser's Ridge. Having the family together is a dream the Frasers had thought impossible.

Yet even in the North Carolina backcountry, the effects of war are being felt. Tensions in the Colonies are great and local feelings run hot enough to boil Hell's tea-kettle. Jamie knows loyalties among his tenants are split and it won't be long until the war is on his doorstep.

Brianna and Roger have their own worry: that the dangers that provoked their escape from the 20th century might catch up to them. Sometimes they question whether risking the perils of the 1700s - among them disease, starvation and an impending war - was indeed the safer choice for their family.

Not so far away, young William Ransom is still coming to terms with the discovery of his true father's identity - and thus his own - and Lord John Grey has reconciliations to make, and dangers to meet...on his son's behalf and his own. Meanwhile, the Revolutionary War creeps ever closer to Fraser's Ridge. And with the family finally together, Jamie and Claire have more at stake than ever before.

"Gabaldon's vast and sweeping account of the war is so intricately plotted and peopled that one is amazed she could conceive and write it in only seven years." (Independent)

Such a great addition to the series...

I just finished listening the book and it feels like leaving family with no idea of when I'll get to see them again... Beautiful story, awesomely read by Davina Porter.
Besides the William and Amaranthus' story arc (as I had trouble liking those characters), this novel was easily in the Top 3 of the series so far.
Thank you, Ms Gabaldon. And thank you Ms Porter for the love you put into the portrayal of all those wonderful characters.

These books have become family

Brilliantly written, superbly narrated. A story that will live with me forever. Gabaldon is a genius, counting the days to the last book in the series.

Great story, love Diana

It’s a cliffhanger again, hope there is a book 11. There is unfinished business to clear up.

The Jamie and Claire Saga Continues ...

The saga of James and Claire Fraser continues. The characters and their progeny continue to be developed in interesting and often unexpected ways. And interestingly some of the questions around how the time travel through the stones might be possible start to be theorised by these characters, particularly Brianna with her engineering mindset to problem solving.

The mystery of time travel, the accurate historic references to the American Revolutionary War and how the fictional characters interact in these events and across time is fascinating.

I did however expect the story to end here. Instead it has ended on a bit of a cliffhanger.

I think @Diana Gabaldon has been watching too much Netflix. 😉 How long will we have to wait for the next one???

DG's Ninth!

Oh no! William! So love reading the William/ Jaimie saga! Miserable as both Audibles, this and The Almanac completed today, first day of 2022!😒 Now have a long wait for DG's 10th book and may not survive. Also very saddened by the utterly brilliant Davina Porter's last narration. Brava Davina for all the character voices. Just incomparable! Davina is beyond genius! Rest well Davina. Diana, thank you for much joy, many tears and unrequited arousal in my 77th year!
