Publisher's summary

Gideon Greenwich, a delinquent nerd, is given two choices: join the football team or be expelled.

To be "initiated" into the team, Gideon attends a violent fraternity party, where he has a startling discovery: the jocks are being controlled by an evil god of sports! As the conspiracy unfolds, it appears that the entire high school has been hijacked by otherworldly beings posing as teachers. To resist their dark powers, Gideon must look beyond social cliques and team up with star quarterback, Doug Rock, and the beautiful cheerleader, Cynthia McDaniels.

Together, the unlikely friends take on the god of sports, the goddess of fashion, and the god of popularity. But defying the "gods of cool" takes courage, a willingness to look stupid, and mind-bending adventures through parallel universes. In this thoughtful and hilarious critique of high school life, national award-winning storyteller, Stephen Gashler, will make you question what it means to be "cool".

A binge-worthy book unlike any other.

The setting? A typical turn-of-the-millennium American High School. The protagonist? An ordinary teen trying to navigate his way through everyday troubles in adolescence. From there however, all things typical and ordinary end, and a mythical, extraordinary tale begins.

My synopsis: Gideon's plan of floating his way through High School is upended, and his eyes are opened to the hidden evils that have been invariably lurking throughout society as he knows it. With help from his freinds, Gideon uncovers an ancient secret order, which traces back as far as the ancient mythological gods themselves. The truths that they discover kindle the wrath of the gods, and Gideon is forced to either oppose the gods and vanquish the devices they use to divide and brainwash his peers, or else lose all his friends in addition to any hope for a future within society's domain.

This isn't your typical High School coming of age story. It's an offbeat, adventure-driven fantasy thriller novel with no limit to the scope of its imagination. At times, the story might appear somewhat disjointed with its various themes and loosly mentioned ideas juggled about, however, you'll soon find that all of the elements of the story end up beautifully woven together into an ingenious tapestry of thought, wit, and humor that will leave a lasting impression on you along with a fresh outlook on life. This book has something for everyone to relate to, while geared towards Young Adults, everyone can appreciate its brilliantly told story.

The audiobook by the way it's superb. The author does a great job at narrating his own novel in addition to the voice work. This was by far the best audio book I've listened to in quite some time.
