There are 96 things Genesis hates about herself. She knows the exact number because she keeps a list. Like number 95: Because her skin is so dark, people call her charcoal and eggplant - even her own family. And number 61: Because her family is always being put out of their house, belongings laid out on the sidewalk for the world to see. When your dad is a gambling addict and loses the rent money every month, eviction is a regular occurrence.

Melody is not like most people. She cannot walk or talk, but she has a photographic memory; she can remember every detail of everything she has ever experienced. She is smarter than most of the adults who try to diagnose her and smarter than her classmates in her integrated classroom - the very same classmates who dismiss her as mentally challenged because she cannot tell them otherwise. But Melody refuses to be defined by cerebral palsy.

Publisher's Summary
Winner of the American Library Association’s Odyssey Honor
An American Library Association Notable Children’s Recording
Named An Amazing Audiobook for Young Adults by the Young Adult Library Services Associate (YALSA)!
Ghost wants to be the fastest sprinter on his elite middle school track team, but his past is slowing him down in this first electrifying novel of a brand-new series from Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe Award-winning author Jason Reynolds.
Ghost. Lu. Patina. Sunny. Four kids from wildly different backgrounds with personalities that are explosive when they clash. But they are also four kids chosen for an elite middle school track team - a team that could qualify them for the Junior Olympics if they can get their acts together. They all have a lot to lose, but they also have a lot to prove, not only to each other, but to themselves.
Ghost has a crazy natural talent, but no formal training. If he can stay on track, literally and figuratively, he could be the best sprinter in the city. But Ghost has been running for the wrong reasons - it all starting with running away from his father, who, when Ghost was a very little boy, chased him and his mother through their apartment, then down the street, with a loaded gun, aiming to kill. Since then, Ghost has been the one causing problems - and running away from them - until he meets Coach, an ex-Olympic Medalist who blew his own shot at success by using drugs, and who is determined to keep other kids from blowing their shots at life.

Beautifully Written, Unique Storyline, Many Lessons
Loved this book! The narrator is awesome and the many lessons the main character, Castle, learns along the way are thought provoking and inspiring.
Warning: this book does discuss violence and drugs- so carefully consider before introducing to younger readers.

Love it for upper elementary and middle grades
A great story that will be relatable to kids. I can’t wait to recommend this book to my students who are reluctant readers. There is no bad language , which is hard to find in new books that deal with relatable kids who aren’t squeaky clean. Guy Lockhart nails the narration.

Awsome
I bought this audio book for my grand kids to listen to on the ride from school and to track practice each day. We all loved the story, me grandma 64 y/o and Ayla 7, Kahlil 11. They both started track this year. The kids can't wait each day to hear the next chapter. They are already asking for the next book. the narrator Guy was a perfect choice for rhis story.

WOW... I LOVED this book so much! It’s my favorite! At first I was slightly surprised at what his dad did but then the book got so good. I always have been made fun of because I have a genetic disease Sothat caused me to have anxiety but after this book I realized you can’t run away from yourself. But you can run towards who you want to be. I used to be the shy and wimpy kid. But I started running towards who I wanted to be. Now I’m the smart and tough kid. I used to be afraid of bullies. Now BULLIES ARE AFRAID OF ME. I definitely recommend this book.

A good clean story.
An easy read for young readers. I use it for homeschooling purposes. It's wholesome enough so I'm not sweating, and entertaining enough to keep my 8 year olds attention. It has emotional highs and lows and is a very captivating story. Reynolds is a go to for black, young readers.
