Publisher's summary

If you want to discover the captivating history of Germania, then pay attention....

Germany is a relatively young nation-state. United in 1871, it's even younger than the United States. However, the territories inhabited by the Germanic people have a rich history that reaches far back in prehistory and antiquity. Located in the heart of Europe, Germany witnessed centuries of conflicts, immigration, and negotiations. Consequently, its shape, size, and ethnicity changed throughout history. The territories which constitute Germany today were often war zones, and at times they would join forces against a common enemy or break apart due to internal conflicts. Because of these conflicts, Germany’s boundaries, as well as what it means to be German, fluctuated throughout history and, in some way, are still evolving. The region's long and troubled history influences its present, its politics, and its nationality.

In Germania: A Captivating Guide to the History of a Region in Europe Where Germanic Tribes Dominated and How It Transformed into Germany, you will discover topics such as

  • The Early History of Germania
  • The Barbarian leaders
  • The Merovingians and the Carolingians

  • The Reformation
  • The Thirty Years’ War
  • The Age of Enlightenment
  • Napoleon and the Revolution in Germany

political slant at the end ruined it.

full disclosure I purchased this audiobook thinking it was expanded take about Tacitus on Germania.

I found it interesting and was assuming it was filling some holes with factual history until it got to the 20th century... From there it started praising the Weimar era, rehashing old communist and socialist propaganda etc, forward to the reunification of Berlin and completely ignoring Reagan's iconic "tear down this wall" speech in 1987! It finished with how wonderful "progressive Germany" is now with its relatively easy emigration policies and its multicultural diversity...do the authors even read the news?

Not as much about the tribes as I would have liked

Based on the title, I had hoped it would be largely about the ancient Germanic tribes, but not even half of it was. This is a good general history of the country, but nothing specific, really.

Cautionary note: highly ideologically bent

I know philosophically speaking it is arguably impossible to seperate bare facts from historical interpretation, however this book does not even attempt impartiality. On top of being saturated with whig history, it makes very odd claims, most notable to me that Tacitus was -the- major influence on Germanic racial ideology. I have no idea why one would make this claim.

If one has the ear to discern philosophy of history from bare facts of history, this might be okay to take up. Otherwise, stay far away.

Okay but...

The first half about the warring tribes and factions was great, but once the subject material hits year 1900 or so the author loses the ability to be neutral in their presentation of events. "Progressive" and "Liberal" are invariably used to mean "good", and anyone not qualifying for these terms is characterized as childish at best and megalomaniacal at worst.

An excellent overview and springboard

This is not an English translation of the Roman account of German barbarians by the same name. While I was looking for the Roman account, this book does summarize and include information from that history and much much more. It’s a very good overview and presents many topics for the reader to pursue for more in-depth reading and research. I did find the narrator’s pronunciation of a few words a little jarring, one that comes to mind that was used a few times being “debacle”.

Decent intro to German history. Simplistic and misses things.

This book is a decent summary of German history for a reader who doesn’t know much yet. It is not for someone hoping to learn more than the basic outline.

For such a reader, it is too simplistic, and misses some things, including those important enough to have included.

The reader was for the most part fine, although I was frustrated by the decision to not even try to know how German words and names are pronounced, and read all letters of such proper nouns as if they were in English. Any reader who tries to discuss these with others later, even in English, would have difficulty. For example, Ewig is eh-veg, nkt you-higs

good overview

I found the narration a bit hard to focus on in sections but it's a good primer on German history. I am curious to learn more about the Germanic tribes.

another that spans the ages

another fascinating insight into another region that has allowed culture to spark, n then flourish

I usually prefer this narrator, but there were a couple of times when intonation didn't keep me as "captivated" as usual.

overall, another recommendation, n will probably reread at a later time

Another great "Captivating History" presentation!

Having read the e-book version of "Germania", I looked forward to listening to the audiobook version. I was very satisfied with the narration and the additional understanding that I received as a result of listening to the audio version. Once again, a concise and very interesting history of the German people from their beginnings to the present.

A COMPREHENSIVE ACCOUNT OF THE BIRTH AND GROWTH OF GERMANY

An absolutely fantastic audiobook covering the birth and growth of Germany from the Paleolithic age through to modern times. It is narrated in an easy to follow manner. As I listened to this account, I marvelled at how clever the German people were. I definitely recommend this audiobook and will listen to it again.

Really interesting weird narrating

I really enjoyed listening to this, and enjoyed the detail and storytelling. I also kind of liked the narrator who has a nice vice, but it does sound like he's an AI. The intonation is a bit odd and robotic. Didn't get in the way and was a lovely listen.
