Prince Onwin wants Cain to do the impossible.

He wants him to assassinate the fae queens from Dimension Beta. By doing so, he'll end the fae civil war on Feary Prime and save the natural order.

The problem is, Cain has a bargain with the courts from Prime, Alpha, and Beta. He can't act directly or indirectly against any of them without incurring a massive penalty to his magic and wellbeing. But it's possible there might be a loophole he can exploit.

Prince Onwin has good reason to want the Beta queens dead. They've somehow allied with the eldritch infesting Gaia Beta. The natural order there has changed so drastically that it's affected the Beta fae and given them access to a new horde of monstrous allies.

The massive shift of power has also affected the war in the divine realm. The current divine order is under a major threat from a surge in eldritch power. The gods of chaos are making matters worse in any way they can. The pantheons have their collective backs against the wall, and all is on the verge of being lost.

Cain knows of a way that might indirectly destroy the Beta queens' power base, but it won't be easy. If he can pull it off, that might end the eldritch threat from Beta forever. But he'll have to turn old enemies into new allies. He'll have to overcome impossible odds. And he'll have to do it all without breaching the bargain he made with the fae.

Otherwise, he'll never taste the sweet, sweet nectar of a mangorita ever again.

another amazing book in this series! love Austin Rising's depictions of each character! every different character has its own voice and the continuity from book 1 to this book, 9, is amazing

Wow, just wow!!

I have been reading this series this year, and it starts off as fun, and progressively gets deeper into so many twisty concepts that makes it truly unique and awesome. It does scratch that Dresden itch, and even has cameos from Dresden/Iron Druid. The pop culture references are fun. Some series just have another "episode", while the great series really get into meat and exponential growth of characters, story, and world building. I have to say the world building up until this point, has been utterly unique. I have never seen a story unfolding in 3 different earths, 3 differenet fae realms, and 3 different other worlds, all interconnected, all crossing over several times per book, all with completely different variables, characters and their own stories on top of the Big story. (Well that is a review of the series really)

This book, was really, really good. I could not believe the amount of left field end game stuff that happened in the last few hours. Totally did not see any of that coming. At all.
No spoilers. (BTW, Facebook people should avoid spoilers in the comments on the main "book is available" page, someone got me on at least one of the end book reveals. Grumble grumble.)

There was action, variety of characters (sometimes *2 or *3 with parallel versions), super high stakes war for survival, and still makes time to make the characters human with small desires that make our world go round. I cannot say enough good things about this book, and am listening to it again, right after completing it on my commutes. So cool.

I have to say, I picked up some miniatures 6-10" tall from online of some of the models of the Cthulu mythos, mentioned in this series. I will be painting them soon. That is partly telling in how interesting I found this book series, that I purchased over $100 worth of associated merchandise due to this story. The Cthulu mythos was a very large and interesting draw for me to the series.

This could have been a satisfying wrap to the series, but I understand the author is halfway through writing the next book already. I wonder where it will go from here, but there were a few avenues left open to continue to do so.
