Publisher's Summary

We live in a culture that's all about self, becoming the best "me" I can be instead of becoming like Jesus. This me-centered message affects every area of our lives - our friendships, our marriages, even our faith - and it breaks each one in different ways. The self-focused life robs our joy, shrinks our souls, and is the reason we never quite break free of insecurity.

In this book, Sharon Hodde Miller invites us into a bigger, Jesus-centered vision - one that restores our freedom and inspires us to live for more. She helps listeners:

  • Identify the secret source of insecurity
  • Understand how self-focus sabotages seven areas of our lives
  • Learn four practical steps for focusing on God and others
  • Experience freedom from the burden of self-focus

Anyone yearning for a purpose bigger than "project me" will cherish this paradigm-shifting message of true fulfillment.

Excellent book!

If you could sum up Free of Me in three words, what would they be?

Worth the time!

What other book might you compare Free of Me to and why?

Bait of Satan. Both books are about our self-focus and how we can overcome this way of thinking.

Which scene was your favorite?

The chapter on love and on making God about me.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

no, but I could

Any additional comments?

This is a great book. I didn't realize how self-focused I was until I read/listened to this. I am going through this book a second time a little slower. I want to learn to apply the truths taught in my daily walk.

A MUST READ

God has used this book to forever change my life. I will review this book and its teachings for the rest of my life. Go ahead, give it a read. You will not be let down. Thank you, Sharon Hodde Miller, for being so transparent and allowing God to use you to impact so many lives.

Good but...

Great eye-opening insight. A good amount of it, however, isn't really relevant for younger, single women, married women without children, and definitely not for guys. I ended up skipping chapters because they were so "middle-aged-woman with kids" centered, with some content sounding too close to a "feminist" spirited perspective instead of a "Christ" spirited perspective. So, if this is your demographic then you will love it. But f you are a young adult woman, newly married woman without children (like me), then a good amount of the content won't connect - or may just flat out annoy you. And if you're a male at any stage of life, then you may not connect with like 75% of the content.

Exactly what I've needed to redirect myself

The narration of this book is easy to listen to. The message of this book is necessary for every person though the content is directed toward women. We know we can all greatly benefit from being less self-focused, self-motivated, self-centered, self-loathing. Sharon's book was far more useful and inspired better introspection than I had expected; it's also clear the author truly has journeyed through this process to a great depth. And she continues to do so. I will likely return to this book numerous times to keep my focus on Christ and see myself as God intended me to see myself.

Hits hard, but points to God

This is one of those books you have to be ready to hear. I found myself say "Ouch, that hurt!" But rewinding it a bit to let it sink in just a little more. Great questions at the end of each chapter for further reflection or group discussion.

great advice

This book offers an alternate perspective to the self centered society we have developed. The author is a reliable source for insight with her PhD and lifelong walk in faith. I could especially apply the wisdom for the chapter on career decisions. "Examine the fruits, then you will know if it from God."

life's better when it's not all about you

I've listened to this book in its entirety twice and have visited specific chapters several times. Great advice and I found it very relative to my actions. I find that I'm not able to do the changes at once, I need to remind myself and practice. The prayers and declarations provided in every chapter are a great reminder of why making life about others leads to more fulfillment for yourself.

Must read

Loved it, would be a good annual read. Definitely one to soak in all the goodness. Also love that there are questions at the end of each chapter for self reflection and would be great to do as a small group!

Really Insightful

I loved the book. It was really insightful and it spoke from the heart of God. As an Applied Psychologist, I love that there was research added to it. I loved the reflection questions. Most of all, I love that I was able to gain insight that brought me closer to my Lord and Saviour. It was humorous, informative & life changing! If you are having any doubts concerning who you are or if you worry about being good enough. This book is for you.
