Donna Andrews returns with her latest charming addition to the bestselling Meg Langslow mystery series.

Meg is in the backyard of the house her brother Rob, Delaney, and their new baby have moved into, supervising some workmen who are using a bulldozer to start digging out a duck pond. She wants to get away from her own house, which has become the staging site for Caerphilly's first Mutt March, which will be held the next day. Meg thinks it will be more peaceful at Rob's house--and it is until the bulldozers uncover a skeleton whose skull has a hole and a bullet rattling around inside.

Meanwhile, Chief Burke begins searching the police records to see if he can identify any missing persons who would fit the bill. He doesn't turn down Meg's offer to help with his identification efforts, and she begins looking in the library and talking to old-timers. She's all the more eager to help because Iris Rafferty, who sold the house to Rob and Delaney and still lives in the mother-in-law suite, disappears the morning after the finding of the body... does her disappearance have anything to do with finding the body? Was it voluntary? Or was she kidnapped--possibly by the prowlers who are spotted lurking around the half-finished duck pond at night? Or do the prowlers have sinister designs on one or more of the dogs who will be marching in the parade?

Written with her classic cozy and investigative style, Donna Andrews is sure to delight in the latest in her Meg Langslow mystery series.

Another fun mystery with Meg and her family and friends. I greatly enjoyed this book. It was read with her usual skill by Bernadette Dunne.

Fun with dogs and detection

While we get a hint about ducks in the title, this title is mostly about dogs, cats, and various other pets needing homes. Author, Donna Andrews, tells us about the plight of pets turned into shelters because they don’t work with the family who adopted them. Meg, and her wonderful friends, are working on a big event to get these needy animals into loving homes that will fit the lifestyle of the humans and animals alike.

Of course the first thing that happens is that Meg’s brother and sister-in-law are rehabbing an old farm that abuts the farm owned by Meg and her family. Almost immediately a human skeleton is discovered. There is our mystery. Who died, when did they die, and whodunit? This big mystery is complicated by the animals being rehabbed for adoption.

I always love the clues we are given along the way. I especially appreciated that the bad guys, dog fighting participants, are off page. These evil humans are reported to be trying to adopt our dogs for their diabolical fights. That is all the page time they get. In the last chapter of the book we gently learn the difference between fighting dogs (dangerously trained dogs) and bait dogs (safe for adoption).

I highly recommend this book. But you will enjoy it more if you start at the beginning of the series and get to know the characters through the years.

All the details are covered!

Animal adoption!

In this story, one mystery after another is found. Each adds to the fall overall arch. And as it could’ve gone many different ways according to the way, the writer desired, the ending isn’t for seeing too early.

Really good one mystery after another stacking and twisting into a better story than normal
