Publisher's summary

“Alafair Burke's latest propulsive thrill-ride is a suspenseful, twisty mystery about memory, friendship and secrets. A page-turner of the highest order.” -Laura Dave, author of The Last Thing He Told Me

The disappearance of a young woman leaves her best friend reeling and an NYPD homicide detective digging into her own past in this twisty mystery about the power of female friendships. From the New York Times bestselling author of The Better Sister and The Wife.

Some pasts won’t stay forgotten . . .

She calls herself Hope Miller, but she has no idea who she actually is. Fifteen years ago, she was found in a small New Jersey town thrown from an overturned vehicle, with no clue to her identity. Doctors assumed her amnesia was a temporary side effect of her injuries, but she never regained her memory. Hope eventually started a new life with a new name in a new town that welcomed her, yet always wondered what she may have left behind—or been running from. Now, she’s leaving New Jersey to start over once again.

Manhattan defense lawyer Lindsay Kelly, Hope’s best friend and the one who found her after the accident, understands why Hope wants a new beginning. But she worries how her friend will fare in her new East Hampton home, far away from everything familiar. Lindsay’s worst fears are confirmed when she discovers Hope has vanished without a trace—the only lead a drop of blood found where she was last seen. Even more ominously, the blood matches a DNA sample with a connection to a notorious Kansas murderer.

With nowhere else to turn, Lindsay calls NYPD homicide detective Ellie Hatcher, the daughter of the cop who dedicated his life to hunting the Kansas killer. Ellie has always believed there was more to the story of her father’s death twenty years earlier—and she now fears that Hope’s recent disappearance could be related.

In pursuit of answers, the women search for the truth beneath long-buried secrets. And when their searches converge, what they find will upend everything they’ve ever known.

Find Me. I never figured out who we were finding.

I think her book The Wife is a masterpiece of twists and turns. A perfect story that I go back and listen to when I want to enjoy a great story. I wish this was too. I am going to give this one another listen just to be sure of my review.

Hope there’s another one!

I love the Ellie Hatcher series!
Every book hooks me from the beginning and doesn’t let up until the last word.

Enjoyed the story and narrator.

Other than being a little too long, I enjoyed the story and the narrator. It was nice hearing about Ellie & Jess too.

not a bad read overall

it started off pretty interesting and kept me entertained throughout most of the book. there were a bit too many characters in this book to keep up with for my liking. I thought the ending would be a bust, but it was pleasantly surprising when it ended the way I was hoping it would.

Good not great

I’ve enjoyed Alafairs books in the past but this one seems rushed and story doesn’t tie together very well. Too many characters to get invested in

long awaited conclusion for Elly Hatcher

The beginning of this book had a lot more back story than I usually prefer, but it ended up making the conclusion more satisfying. I'm glad I stuck through it. I've missed Elly Hatcher and was happy to have her story concluded. I won't say much more because I don't want to give the ending away.

So many characters

You really need to pay attention. There are so many characters that I almost had to write down names and relationships to be able to keep track. It was a decent enough story but I did start to get bored with it. Then BAM…. Not what I expected . Turned out good.

Nope, Not For Me

This was on sale for $11.18 which is less than a gold credit, but this was my one and only chance at this stand apart from Mary Higgins Clark! I took a chance as I enjoyed You Don’t Own Me narrated by the great January LaVoy, and since I own 98 % Audible reads from Ms Early, I said why not?? Well, now I can tell which part of the MHC stories, this author writes. In this book, it had a good premise and mystery ending, but Ohhh the dialogue needed a whole lot of editing, way too wordy for me. This was a 7 hr book padded to 9 hrs.
And the darkness that I gleaned in MHC books, comes from this author as she demonstrated in this book. So nope not for me.
I like to feel good when I finish a book, and this one just didn’t do it for me even with Ms Early narrating. Don’t miss Karin Slaughters Will Trent series Ms Kathleen reads.
Were my comments of help?
