Publisher's summary

Life has never been easy for Duncan Stiel. His childhood was the stuff of nightmares, and his day job as an undercover police officer forces him to hide his true self and occasionally lands him in the hospital. So when he finally meets the perfect man, it comes as no surprise that everything falls apart around him. What Duncan doesn't expect is that the hardest hurdle to get over before he can make a life with Aaron Sutter is the one inside himself.

Everyone thinks Aaron has it all - looks, money, fame, and success beyond measure. Everyone, that is, except Aaron. At the end of the day, the cameras stop flashing, friends go back to their own lives, company business is handled, and Aaron is always alone. The moment he meets Duncan Stiel, Aaron knows he'll do anything to hold onto the larger-than-life detective. But when he realizes money won't buy him the ultimate happiness, Aaron needs to find the strength to give Duncan something much more important - his heart.

Good story, best narration

I love the law enforcement stories my Mary Calmes (Matter of Time, Marshals). It's a wonderful bonus that Tristan James narrates many of them. He could read a phone book and I'd pay to listen.

Good narration. Good story.

A book written by Mary Calmes and narrated by Tristan James is an auto buy for me. As expected, I enjoyed the romance and interactions between Aaron and Duncan. The undercover story was even more convoluted than the stories with Jory in earlier entries of Matter of Time series, but it was fun. The story was resolved well, but I feel like there could be just a little bit more....

Finally An HEA for Aaron

I hopes for this story for so long because of all the subordinate characters of the series Aaron is one of the most intriguing.

Playboy billionaire Aaron Sutter has spent more years than can be counted pining for 'The one that got away', Jory Harcourt but when he meets tough as nails Duncan Steil things change. He finds that he cannot forget the beautiful detective he spends a night of passion with. For the first time in his life the normally confident man finds himself shy and uncertain and wanting something he has never wanted before..something just for himself. Not just something but someone, Duncan Steil.

Outside influences and familial pressures drive them apart but somethings are to strong to be denied.

Duncan is strong, beautiful and determined to make his way in a profession he has spent a very long time to make his own. The cost of his choice costs him though and that cost is in having to deny himself the one thing he truly wants for himself. Someone he can call home.

When an investigation goes sideways he has to ask for help and it comes in a very unlikely source and despite all the external factors seeking to keep them apart Duncan and Aaron will have to learn to trust and accept what others would seek to deny or destroy.

It's a heck of a ride so buckle up and gettyup!

not about Jory and Sam

First book in the series that isn't about Jory. I enjoyed this one. We have a plot and two sexy men with demons and hangups.
Creeps, billionaires, cops, orgies, and some suspense of belief.

Loved the narrator.

Would you consider the audio edition of Parting Shot to be better than the print version?

I'd have to say yes in this case. The narrator did a great job bringing Duncan Stiel to life and a lot of the time it really felt like you were actually sitting there, listening to this guy telling his story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Parting Shot?

When Duncan was hurt and Aaron broke their cover because of it.
Also, the moment Duncan unintentionally declared his love for Aaron while they were stuck in the security tower.

Which character – as performed by Tristan James – was your favorite?

Duncan Stiel.

Who was the most memorable character of Parting Shot and why?

Duncan Stiel. He's just such an interesting guy. Tough, but sweet. Powerful and dominant on the surface, but submissive behind closed doors. He's a lot more interesting than Jory was.

Any additional comments?

I kind of wish this narrator could have done the a Warder series...

Great story!

Love the story of Aaron and Duncan Narration a little shaky. Too often characters are indistinguishable.

Duncan and Aaron

The final book in this series was great. I loved that Duncan and Aaron had little to no angst. It wasn't insta-love as so many people say in their reviews. Things did happen pretty quickly for them though. Ever since they met in book 6 at a dinner with Jory and Sam, Duncan and Aaron had that instant chemistry that most of the background couples in this series seem to have. I am glad that Aaron finally found someone. He realized that his obsession with Jory was just from the fact that he refused him.

Tristan James narration was great and so much better than the others that narrated this series. He is one of maybe five male narrators that I love to listen to. The characters were distinctive and even though the spacing between chapters were a little off it still didn't detract from the story. The long silence in between chapters was more of an editing issue than a narration issue.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this series and this was a great finish. But it's not quite over yet. Mary Calmes actually has free flicketts that happen after this story so we get to see what's going on in Sam and Jory's lives. They are short, humorous and a great read.
