NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A “compulsively readable” (Diana Gabaldon) novel teeming with love, betrayal, and religious conflict that brings ancient Egypt to vivid life, from the author of Cleopatra’s Daughter and Maria

“Meticulously researched and richly detailed . . . an engrossing tribute to one of the most powerful and alluring women in history.”—The Boston Globe

Nefertiti and her younger sister, Mutnodjmet, have been raised in a powerful family that has provided wives to the rulers of Egypt for centuries. Ambitious, charismatic, and beautiful, Nefertiti is destined to marry Amunhotep, an unstable young pharaoh. It is hoped that her strong personality will temper the young ruler’s heretical desire to forsake Egypt’s ancient gods.

From the moment of her arrival in Thebes, Nefertiti is beloved by the people, but she fails to see that powerful forces are plotting against her husband’s reign. The only person brave enough to warn the queen is her younger sister, yet remaining loyal to Nefertiti will force Mutnodjmet into a dangerous political game—one that could cost her everything she holds dear.

I wanted this book to be sexier, stronger and more exciting than it was. In the end, it was interesting, but mostly a background book. I do give Michelle Moran points for her attempt at historical accuracy, and I do appreciate her approach to the noble court in Egypt. She could have taken liberties but chose to keep it as faithful as she could to the present-day conjectures on Nefertiti's life.

The narrator did a decent job. Again, it could have been pumped up to generate excitement to the reader. I do feel like the reader did justice to the Nefertiti's sister's voice.

Nefertiti: A Bit Boring

I am glad I listened to this book, I learned things I was unsure about ( Nefertiti's relationship to King Tut; ) and things I had never thought about ( Rats will stay away from mint.) It is an interesting, entertaining and enjoyable book.

Great listen!

So, I thought I bought a historical book on Nefertiti. Turns out this is a novel told from the perspective of a boring, less-than, little sister of Nefertiti. However, the story was pretty intriguing and fun in its historic play. I'm a big 18th Dynasty Egypt reader/novice historian, and enjoyed the blend of history and drama. I'm excited to listen to the next book! Kudos to the writer. Very creative. Great narration, too.

Not what I expected, but wow!

I often read on ancient Egypt and this story was a nice visit to that intriguing time and characters. I listen in the evening and this was nice for relaxing. Enjoyed thoroughly.

Interesting visit to ancient Egypt

WOW! What a ride into history! I thoroughly enjoyed this interpretation of what could have taken place, the beauty brought forth in such tantalizing depiction of detail, and how Michelle Moran weaves this story so that I am transported, as if I am there witnessing everything right before my very eyes! Well done!!

Truly Royal!

One of my favorite time periods is Ancient Egypt. From the clothes, the pyramids, the culture and the way of life. I also love how you can read about some of their history in the Bible as well. It’s so interesting, and haunting almost, to study their traditions and religions and obsessions over the after life. So I was excited to read this! However, I felt more like I was reading a teenage soap opera than a novel about the intricacies of ruling a kingdom. Akahaten was the hardest to stomach as he is portrayed as a ridiculous, senseless and merciless Pharoah on one page and then the most gentle and loving husband on another. Most people who demand things with no common sense and become super paranoid are not good family people. So, that was very inconsistent, and it felt as though the author was trying too hard to portray him as a teenage puberty trip.
The other characters were interesting, though not remarkable. I would’ve enjoyed more description of the palaces and buildings than the squabbles between two ambitious women. But I suppose I may be one of the few who would want that.
Motnudgmet was the saving grace for her family. I enjoyed the story through her eyes, and thought it was an excellent point of view. I also found the worship of Aten and the whole way of life that surrounded the religion very interesting. The gods really were the center of life for Egypt, in a very scary way!
All in all, decent but not great. I wanted more Egypt and less soap opera.

Just a beautiful telling of a tragic story. Highly suggested. I would love to see this made into a TV series. Now I'm off to buy the next book The Heretic Queen

Stunning audiobook

Everything about this book is pure perfection! Moran's description of ancient Egypt's greatest cities, customs and rulers takes you on an adventure like no other. BRAVO!!!

The one that started my Moran love affair!

Fantastic narration, and great story. The author does a superb job weaving history, and then taking artistic leeway and weaving a fictional story, based on historical facts. it's a beautiful blend!!! I read this book years ago, then came across it on Audible and have listened to it 4-5 times while I do work on my farm. Not only does Moran write well- paired with Cassandra Campbell and her narration, it's top notch. I have read others in this genre (Hapshesut by another author who knowingly or unconsciously copied Morans style- even verbage, but the narrator made the book awful to listen to, and it was published years after this book, and the similarities are so cringey, i couldnt finish it- I felt that, that author was cheaply knocking off this masterpiece.) but I digress. I looked for many more books by Moran and Campbell. The Heretic queen was just as good as Nefertiti. Michelle Moran did that story of historical fiction, justice as well. Those 2 books, by Michelle Moran with Cassandra Cambell Narrating are among my top 3 favorites! I just love it! I think you will too!!!

Superb historical fiction, fantastic narration!!!

Moran paints a stunning portrait of the illustrious Nefertiti and her sister Mutnojmet. This paints a story of a woman tied to a throne she wants no part of, and explains how a pair of young rulers altered the course of Egyptian history.

Breathtaking
