Publisher's summary

New enemies. Unlikely allies. A neon city in the Deadlands that never sleeps.

Halek Cain has mysteries to solve, people to rescue, and a vendetta to carry out.

But he must fix his Reaper augmentations before they kill him. He needs raw materials from Gronic, a technical specialist on Roxo III, and time to put himself right before the Union comes for him.

Everything seems like it’s going to work out...until he learns Elise is in trouble.

If Cain doesn’t get to her first, everything that happened on Dreadmax will have been for nothing.

The Last Reaper will encounter assassins, Union special operators, and a mysterious rival from his past. The odds are overwhelming, and the enemies are mounting.

But when all is said and done, each of them will learn that you must always fear the Reaper.

"Seriously"

Flawed. This book was not written by the same duo as the first volume. This is horrible. I do not lightly criticize any writers work, but really guys what happened to you guys? Whining continues through the first half of the book. All during this time hoping for it to get better, I continued in tortured time reduced to slow motion due to the pain of listening to this garbage. I actually went back to the first volume to see my review of 4-5 stars and listen to a chapter to insure I was not hallucinating during this listen. Nope volume two is bad, really bad. The voice actor must be a true professional to even be able to continue through with this horrible book. I give him higher ratings as is his due. Only for actually completing the work alone he deserves 3 stars. Hopefully it does increase the average rating of the book which deserves less than 1 star.

Honest

If you are expecting a performance like the first installment, you are not going to get it. I was a little more than two hours in when I had to switch it off. Not worth a credit. The story is poor or more like a nagging wife ( A reaper story?) The narrator conveys as cry-baby. I hold a lot of titles and I hate to give poor reviews. This is a poor presentation of a title. I hope this will save others their credits or money.

Solid sequel

Several of the reviews accompanying low ratings complain about the book being ”whiny.” I have no idea what they are referring to in the story. Perhaps they enjoyed the first book for being almost non-stop action and did not like this book’s more reasonable pacing and the protagonist’s increased introspection.

Other negative reviews suggested this book is less well written than the first book. I did not find that to be the case. Instead, I felt that the first book suffered from its last third being a tedious litany of unnecessary hurdles that did not advance the characters or plot; this book had a clear progression between scenes and very little could have been dropped without detracting from the story. I don’t mean to suggest that it is excellent writing, but it is good enough.

I look forward to more books in this series.

Uhmmmm

So I feel like the first book had much more time spent on the writing than this one. Narrator doing his best but still can't fix a broken story. So bad compared to the first book, sorry guys.

Action and Story and Redemption

This universe is amazing, and Reaper is among my faves. Add Ray Porter to the mix and it's a home run. Loved it. Waiting on the rest.

Good second installment

Not sure the reason for that poor reviews. I feel the story was well written and the narration nailed the presentation. Fun read/listen.

Another great story with an awesome narrator

Ray Porter really brings the character of Halek Cain to life. I read the book prior and couldn't resist picking up the audiobook. Great job all around.

A fun sequel

This one picks up where the last one ended and expands on the story in interesting ways. As someone who has read the entire series to date so far, I think the next two are my favorites, so I'm eagerly waiting for more.

A sequel that delivers

I enjoyed how this story flowed smoothly on from the first. Chaney & Moon grow the characters, introduce new ones, and pushes Hal journey to survive onwards. The banter between Hal & his AI brings humour to a gritty survival against the odds story. Also, Ray Porter’s narration brings the characters and the gritty nature of the story to life. Definitely worth a credit.

Nailed it.

Ray Porter is perfect for this, and the story effortlessly gathers pace. Slick action, great dialogue and a strong sequel to book 1.
