Publisher's summary

"I have faults enough, but they are not, I hope, of understanding." -Mr. Darcy, Pride and Prejudice

When Fitzwilliam Darcy makes an impetuous offer of marriage to Miss Elizabeth Bennet, he is convinced they have as good a chance as any for a harmonious life together. That is, until an overheard conversation changes everything, and Darcy realizes he is now joined in perpetuity to a woman who loathes the very sight of him.

Elizabeth Bennet's expectations for matrimonial accord were never very high, having accepted Mr. Darcy's proposal in a fit of pique, not love. Still, she is determined to make the best of her situation, despite having tied herself to such an arrogant, disagreeable man.

But life at Pemberley is not at all what she imagined, and Elizabeth soon finds herself with more questions than answers about the enigmatic gentleman she agreed to wed.

Trapped in a marriage founded on misunderstandings, Fitzwilliam and Elizabeth Darcy struggle with deepening attraction while confronting self-doubt and old betrayals. But is love enough to heal the wounds of the past? What will it take for two people bound by duty to find their way home to one another?

It’s fine…

This book was pleasant and interesting, but I can’t say it was in anyway compelling. The basic premise of the book, the lack of understanding between Elizabeth and Darcy, is well supported in the original P&P, so the plot was plausible. Jennifer Altman‘s Elizabeth is true to character although she lacks the sparkle of the original. Darcy, on the other hand, is a washed out version of himself. This author let us see his kind side, but unfortunately, she didn’t balance it with any of the of the original Darcy’s strength of character and charisma. I did enjoy seeing more of Georgiana, and it was fun to see Lydia take a different route, while remaining true to her original character.
The performance was fine. The version of the recording I got had a tinny quality.
I think this book would appeal to a diehard Pride and Prejudice fan. For me, it was worth the time invested in listening, but not worth the credit. I would rather have spent it on another Loretta Chase or Grace Burrowes novel.,

A variation with a few new twists

This will definitely be a re-listen. The readers got to see Darcy’s kinder side throughout the story. There was a lot of miscommunication but, of course, a happy ending was had by all. Except Lady Catherine, of course. The narrator was excellent! I refuse to listen to any books rad by a virtual voice.

A Pleasure to Read and Listen

I bought this book when it was released in 2021 and was happy to see the audiobook released. It is truly excellent. The variation is unique, brilliantly written and a pleasurable listen, thanks to Stevie Zimmerman, who is always outstanding in all her performances.

Darcy and Elizabeth — While these two beloved characters will frustrate you to no end at times, you cannot help but love them, and even cry for them.

This book is a favourite and I most highly recommend it. I know for sure I will be reading and listening to the audiobook again.

Lovely depth

This is one of my favorite variations. I have listened to and read many. Stevie Zimmerman is superb as always. This is the second Jennifer Altman book and both are good.
I enjoyed the depth of character development, slight mystery and multifaceted story. You get a stoic but also emotional Mr. Darcy and am Elizabeth that is enjoyable and not annoyingly stubborn or unrealistically perfect.

Really Enjoyed This Story

Without giving anything away, there are some great twists in this story for characters other than ODC.

The story, however, for ODC is well done as well. The “usual misunderstandings” are resolved fairly quickly as Lizzy blurts out her accusations of mistreatment of Wickham in the early days of their marriage.

But, there are many more secrets to uncover and wounds to heal as Lizzy discovers who Darcy really is and Darcy overcomes other hurts from his past.

One of the best P&P variations!

I've listened to over 100 P&P variations over the years and this was one of the best! Stevie Zimmerman is the best narrator as we all know. I hope this author writes another very soon. Great job!
