Nerves shredded, flesh torn, and the milking machine has been turned on… but whatever you do, don’t drink the milk.

Lower Crumbsbottom is surrounded by farmland, picturesque and serene. But take a picnic there at your peril. When Richard and Reggie go visiting, they get more than they bargained for. Kidnapped and forced into depraved procreative practices, Richard demands nothing more than to escape. Danny is searching for his brother, and Shirley is riding more than his bike.

Then there is Lewis and Maisie, and their children, Anton, Tim, and Jean, who all love each other very much.

And last is Daisy, who just wants to eat.

Farm Animals is an extreme horror novel that will undoubtedly upset those with delicate sensibilities. Consider this a trigger warning for everything.

Great story for gore lovers and evening the score. Sometimes people get what they deserve and sometimes they don't. The characters requiring justice make you hate them and the victims make you side with them. All of this on a primal level.

The writing and characters were strong, and the tone stayed solid. The narration was on par with many of the stories I've come to enjoy. In audioland if you can recognize which voice is who, it's good.

When an author can make you despise a character enough to want to stop the book, it's one to keep your eyes on.

So why 4 stars instead of 5? It was very close to it. One part of the storyline I found a little for fever dream than smoothed out story telling.

Make your own judgement, I sincerely enjoyed the writing.

Strong narration with a quaint British fellow telling the tale helps strength the material. This is a thriller with elements of sexual trauma as yokels treat humans as stock. The material is explicit in some cases but anyone familiar with ‘extreme horror’ won’t find anything too shocking here (there are books that haunt me even now, Farm Animals is more reasonably provocative that truly gag inducing maybe a 7 out of 10 on the gag scale). It has an anything goes approach to a weird family dynamics and that leaves the viewer unsettled and surprised with there it might go. The ‘scares’ are low brow sex abuse stuff more shock minded than atmospheric. The villains feel token more a sort of redneck joke gone amuck but some under development leaves an aura of mystery. As an ethical vegetarian I have a view of livestock as inhuman and felt this book was spot on in it's implied questions of morality (but that may have been unintended, it's not vegetarian manifesto and more smut [complimentary]). Overall I enjoyed it and appreciated the frank shock value it wallows in but I wish it’s baddies had been a little more menacing.

I love rural folks as villains. I'm from the south in the US, and I gotta say, there is something disturbing about farms, especially when you are isolated. My brain was always making up what the neighbors were doing in their barns and out in the field rows for so long. Sometimes, they were just checking fence lines for breaks. Others, you could hear the squeal of...well. One neighbor raised pigs. The other, beef cattle. You can let your imagination draw up what the squealing was all about.

This book reminded me a lot of that instinctual dread I made up as a kid, and reinvented it as adult ones. Sexual abuse aplenty. Dehumanization. It was a great read/listen. The main antagonists very much dig into the 'Tiger Ridge' stereotype with incest, but I'm not upset about it! Just wish it could've been twisted more, but, with how it was incorporated into the plot, the decision makes sense.

Audio narration is fantastic as well.

Fantastic Horror Read!
