Publisher's Summary

Meet Julian, Dick, Anne, George and Timothy. Together they are The Famous Five.

'There was something else out on the sea by the rocks - something dark that seemed to lurch out of the waves...What could it be?'

Julian, Dick and Anne are spending the holidays with their tomboy cousin George and her dog, Timothy. One day, George takes them to explore nearby Kirrin Island, with its rocky little coast and old ruined castle on the top.

Over on the island, they make a thrilling discovery, which leads them deep into the dungeons of Kirrin Castle on a dangerous adventure. Who - and what - will they find there?

This story was a really good start to an amazing series!

It’s a pity the five won’t see Dobby again.:(

Great adventure and splendid performance!

Thumbs up to a great adventure. The children are lovely and the story has a great twist. Could do without some of the boy vs girl issues but overall great.

Not Just for Kids

This is a great story to get acquainted with the Famous Five series.
Insightful characterisations, believable storyline, skilfully performed by Jan Francis.
Don't be put off by the one voice doing all of the characters. More professional
and enjoyable to listen to than the use of various child voices used in the dramatisations.
May take a few minutes to get used to the voices, but once you do, you're on your way.

Gorgeous stories

I have always loved the Famous Five series. Safe, fun, action (and food) filled adventures for kids! Jan Francis is an excellent narrator, not only giving each character a distinct voice, but acting and performing throughout. Highly recommended.

Great family listening

I read some of the famous five books when I was young, so decided to buy this to introduce my children to something that I had enjoyed. It went down better than I expected, the story really hasn’t dated much at all, and both of my kids loved it and are now looking forward to book 2 on our next long car journey.

Memories

Bought this for my sons. I enjoyed it more than them because of the memories it brought back when I used to read it as a kid myself.

Nostalgic

My mum used to read this to my sister and me. Bit problematic re gender etc in 2016 but can be forgiven considering time period. Really relaxing and comforting to go to sleep to even two decades later!

review

What did you like most about Famous Five: 1?

I liked it the most when they found the gold.

Who was your favorite character and why?

George was my favourite character because she owned the island.

What does Jan Francis bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I think if you get stuck on a word when you are reading the book you would have to sound it out but in an audio book they just say it.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes I begged my mother so I could finish it because it was so exciting.

Any additional comments?

I think this is the best book I have ever heard (so far). I am about to listen to the next Famous Five.
