Publisher's summary

Sometimes family is there to love you, and sometimes family is there to kill you . . .

When a man came into my shop in the Great Marketplace at the Crossroads of the Worlds and tried to kill me, it completely ruined my day. Not only did I have to clean up the blood, but disposing of his body made me late to meet my friends for drinks.

A nagging little detail kept bugging me, though. As he died, he said he was hired by my mother's family—people I hadn't seen for more than a decade. Then I discovered that assassins had made attempts on my brother and sister as well. As much as I didn't want to, I decided I should find out who wanted us dead, and put a stop to it.

Talk about stepping out of the pan into the fire . . .

Contains mature themes.

Above average listen.

Enjoyed this start to a series. Though the story itself was average, the characters and narration really stood out.

Enjoyable Escape

I was looking for an escape and this worked for me. The main character was an intelligent problem solver who loves her family and the life she has built for herself. She isn’t against romance but it’s not the top concern. All the other 5 star reviews I read were also accurate. Would love to see this author/narrator combo get more listens.

Got the kindle first, but it seemed slow

I was right in thinking that the audible version would be better. I was so right. It leant itself well to the voice and moved right along,
BR Kingsolver has always been a favorite of mine. This seemed to use the same world as Gods & Demons. Although with little crossover other than the pervasive influence of Eire. Not a bad thing by any means.
Overall very enjoyable

Good start

This is a good start to a new series. I was happy there wasn't a major cliff hanger to leave the story on so it should be a new story in the next book. If you like heroins that are whiny and afraid of their own shadow, this is not the book for you. Siobahn does a wonderful job with all the different characters, the story was fast paced and never seem to let down.

Narrator sucks

Loved the E-book and author but this narrator with more or less one flat Irish voice ruined this favorite story for me,read the book many times but this particular audio there’s no life or character individualality to the great story needs a new narrator to try again…
