Publisher's Summary

From Chris Brookmyre, winner of the Theakstons and McIllvanney awards for Black Widow, comes a standalone psychological thriller full of twists, lies and betrayal.

One family, two holidays, one devastating secret. To new nanny Amanda, the Temple family seem to have it all: the former actress; the famous professor; their three successful grown-up children.

But like any family, beneath the smiles and hugs there lurks far darker emotions.

Sixteen years earlier, little Niamh Temple died while they were on holiday in Portugal. Now, as Amanda joins the family for a reunion at their seaside villa, she begins to suspect one of them might be hiding something terrible.... And suspicion is a dangerous thing.

A rare poor showing from Mr B

Slow to get going, derivative and lazy, difficult to get into, and a poor narration.

Not his usual standard

I was really disappointed by this. It lacks the sharpness, in plotting, characters, and dialogue, of most of his novels.

What I can only assume was supposed to be a big twist, was glaringly obvious from very early on. The characters had potential to be interesting, but they mostly remained little more than drafts. The turns of phrase that made, for example, The Sacred Art of Stealing or Quite Ugly One Morning so mesmerising were missing.

The book has a lovely scene where a character rips into conspiracy theories, and this incident, as well as the debunking of conspiracy theories in general, is referenced often in the book, but I was disappointed that there was no careful but brutal dismantling of the subject the way The Unsinkable Rubber Ducks did with Mediums.

Although it’s a different type of book anyway, having more in common with his recent few novels than the many that came before, it wasn’t even equal to those latter ones. I’d have thought it was so-so if it was written by someone else, but it struck me as a genuinely surprisingly poor novel from Christopher Brookmyre.

It was not helped by the narration, which I thought sounded like the narrator was endlessly and breathlessly being taken mildly by surprise.

What a disappointment!

I've really enjoyed previous Chris Brookmyre books and I was looking forward to this one, but oh, what a let down.
I stuck with it for a while, but there was no glimmer of any improvement, so I gave up, and I'd recommend that you don't even bother starting it.

Hummmmm!

I'm not a millennial or a raging liberal so I found this book irritating much of the time. For instance one of the main protagonists has been brought up by a gay couple and is annoyed by people asking about this or really expressing anything other than total acceptance. It's seems that to ask about such an unusual thing makes you some kind of crass bumpkin. This, to me, is unreasonable if i told someone I was a human cannonball, which has about the same likelihood of someone in their 20's being brought up by two men I would expect people to be surpised and inquisitive. Although he doesnt appear much Jack Parlabane's influence is still strongly felt. I have long thought this character has been developing into a preachy old fart and I fear Mr.Brookmyre is joining him. Won't be reading this author again

One of Brookmyre's Best

A different pace and tone than most of his other books but the excellent characters and twisting plot are there.

A great book for old fans and new readers.

Interesting fare

All my dates with Chris Brookmyre up until this point have been chaperoned by Jack Parlabane, so it was with some trepidation that I ventured into Fallen Angel. The story was very clever, very sad and encompassed eloquently expressed emotion. I must, at this juncture, give a standing ovation to Cathleen McCarron for her outstanding voice performance. She slipped easily between the different accents and I was thoroughly impressed. Whilst Jack Parlabane did make a cameo appearance, I did miss his dark humour and sarcastic, biting tongue. But obviously it is completely unreasonable of me to expect Mr Brookmyre to restrict his writing to one character. This foray into a different kind of thriller was very good and I enjoyed it. I just think I'm struggling with the concept of Chris Brookmyre without Jack Parlabane, it's a bit like when Take That lost Robbie Williams, only with less teenage, female hysteria. I intend to listen to more of Mr Brookmyre's Parlabaneless work and I'm sure once my feelings of loss have worn off, I'll appreciate it for the genuinely good writing, character led stories of excellence to which we have become accustomed. I do recommend you listen to Fallen Angel straight away because you can always thank me later.

Brilliant narrator. great story. An inte

A new string to Brookmyre's bow, he is a very talented writer who I firmly believe could write a great story in any genre he cared to try.

Big letdown

Poor structure that made it unnecessarily difficult to follow. Sorry Chris but looking forward to your next book.

Mr Brookmyre delivers again

Another great book and performance. I prefer Chris Brookmyres' tartan noir over his more serious tales but this was still an enjoyable listen.
