Publisher's summary

Just days before the running of the biggest thoroughbred horse race in the world, an act of bioterrorism kills Kentucky's lieutenant governor, and former FBI Special Agent Brooke Fairfax receives a video of the murder from her long-time anonymous source. When Brooke discovers domestic terrorists are actually after the governor - her late husband's brother - and that the radicals are eyeing more targets, she heads to Kentucky to stop the threat.

Shortly after the political assassination, the FBI zeroes in on one person: international mogul Declan O'Roark. Though Brooke has been out of the game since her husband was murdered, her former boss thinks she is the perfect candidate to connect Declan to the crime. Despite the FBI clearly establishing means and opportunity, Declan remains unfazed; his motives have nothing to do with murder, but with getting closer to Brooke Fairfax. And Brooke finds the case becoming even more unclear as she falls for the FBI's number-one suspect.

Ok

The story was interesting but unlikely with some aspects made to fit the story but couldn’t happen. I live in Lexington and the local references were fun but this was a bit too much of a romance novel for me. You know where the girl meets a rich handsome foreign man who absolutely falls her but she is reluctant. Too predictable. The book had a slight right wing political undertone to it which is a turn off.

Good Story!

The beginning starts off a but slow, but picks up and improves for the rest of the book.

If you like police stories with mystery, try it!

Enjoyable, mysterious, frustrating. I'm exhausted with Romeo. Great Story. Emily Sutton Smith is one of my favorite story tellers for crime stories.

Good Mystery

I wish there had been more romance, and less of this woman being ridiculous about her gun.

5* Story!

if you can get through the 1st few chapters of the book, you will be glad you stuck with it if you love a good thriller suspense with a little romance thrown in. This would have been a 5 ⭐ book all around if the female narrator didn't sound like a robot 90% of her read. The tone of her voice, along with the story made it tolerable to endure listening to the book.

Interesting thriller.

Great story and plot with lots of twists. Really liked the characters, location, and love interest. Irish billionaire that owns thorobred race horses, romantic with closed door sex.

So this is a copy cat book

Brooke and Declan are Eve and Roarke from JD Robb’s In Death Series. Irish billionaires in love with broken women in law enforcement. I get that she is grieving but the tough girl act gets old very fast. She is reckless and make’s really dumb choices just to prove what a badass she is. Series is free with my membership so will keep listening as it’s not costing me anything. Do not waste a credit on this drivel.

It's a mixed bag... Not a good performance: Emily

Emily Sutton-Smith mispronounces "Brooke" several times in the beginning. I thought she was saying "broke"! She also mispronounced "tousled" (should be said as tuss-eld). Made it hard to follow the story with all the badly pronounced words. Also, she and Alan Smyth pronounced "tacin" differently. Needs consistency. One last issue is that A Fool's Errand was given both genders in this narration by Emily. The book has it written correctly (probably an update by the author) and the narration should update it as well.

The issues I have with this book

1. I've never lived in Kentucky, but find it absurd for an author to change the names of cities, places and events.

2. Why invent a nonexistent chemical? The world is full of toxic chemicals; some quite obscure. This is.. silly.

3. Designer shoes, designer shoes... ad nauseum. 5 inch heels and a glock? Riiiight.

4. I've listened to and read J.D. Robb. NR does J.D. Robb quite well. Worlds better.

5. I solved the "mystery" *hours* before our allegedly brilliant protagonist. The solution was SO obvious.

Good story. keeps the readers enthralled

Pity about the pronunciations. Terrible enough to spoil the story - America needs to realise Europeans listen to audible too.

Poor Narrator

Character voices from female narrator inconsistent. Multiple times sounded computer generated voice. I stayed with it, but would not recommend

Disappointing

I couldn’t complete the book, the readers idea of a Scot’s or Irish accent was awful, l also felt that she muddled them up at times consequently l lost the plot.

Not my cuppa tea.

Struggled through this book it was a bore. The female Narrator should never attempt an irish, scottish or Eastern European accent ! Come on Audible do better.

Poor narrator

The female narrator had an awful reading voice - very flat and soporific but her attempts at Irish and Scottish accents were just hideous. Come on audible, do better!

Fool's Errand

Good dual narration written by someone who doesn't know a filly from a colt and that they don't change sex in the middle of a training session. The greatest horseraces in the world don't take place in the US (the Epsom Derby and the Aintree Grand National are the most watched races in the world take place in England). Stallions who win at Epsom go on to sire champions all over the world, usually go on to best studs in Ireland. So it's strange an Irishman "billionaire" chooses to train in Kentucky.

I don't know about the FBI facts, but if they are as haphazard as the equines ones, this tale is a Fool's errand.

LAUGHABLE AND NOT IN A GOOD WAY
