Publisher's Summary

As human beings, we will inevitably go through a life-changing event at some point in our life. It could be losing a job of 20 years, finalizing a divorce, being forced to retire early because of an injury, or leaving the military. These life-changing events can have disastrous effects on us and the people around us. Some of us never work through these events and end up unhappy and stuck in life.

This happened to Nick when he left a 12-year career as a Marine Raider with the Marine Corps Special Operations Unit. For years, he was stuck with feelings of anger, indifference, and bitterness. Until he finally decided to take action and apply the skills he learned as a Raider and got to work on solving his personal problems. Excommunicated Warrior takes you through the journey of Nick’s transition out of the Special Operations as he attempted to reintegrate into the civilian world. Through this journey, he identified seven different stages of transition. Nick quickly realized that these seven stages were something most veterans had to go through and he launched a non-profit that focused on helping the nation's veterans transition out of the military.

Soon, Nick started developing steps to work through the stages, all aimed at the military community. However, through various speaking engagements, it became clear that Nick's ideas about the seven stages of transition applied to anyone, not just veterans. The stages applied to anyone that had gone through a life-altering event. This book outlines the seven stages and how you can use them in your life. In short, the book is for anyone who has gone through a life-changing event and refuses to be a victim of circumstance. Anyone who decides to never quit, never surrender, and always move forward.

A True Must Listen

This audiobook is a must listen, regardless of your background as so much of it is relevant to anyone who has experienced, or will experience, significant change in their life. I originally read the book cover to cover in one sitting because I was so engrossed in the story. Then I came back for the audiobook release because the story is that good. An added bonus for the audiobook are the insightful podcasts with the author and special guests following each chapter. Each is well worth the listen. The author's deeply personal account of the stages of transition he has gone through provide a unique perspective, and his commonsense approach and guidance for handling the difficult transitions in life provide a roadmap for success for listeners who are willing to put in the work. While the author's frank discussion of the difficulty he encountered in navigating his personal relationships was impressive, especially with those of his children, my favorite part of the audiobook is that the author's passion and determination to live his best life shine through in this story.

Don’t skip

Fantastic. I served with Nick in the Marine Corps and bought the book out of support for my friend, but I learned a hell of a lot in this book.
We all go through transitions. We all change. Nick helps understand those changes and how to harness and control them, and most importantly how to learn and grow from them.
This book is for anyone who is soon to go through a transition, going through a transition, or has someone in their life going through a transition.
This book is for anyone. Don’t skip it. Thanks, Nick.

this needs to be standard issue

Nicks story is amazing, every part was almost exactly the same as my own, even if the details may be different the situation was the same. Every vet needs to read this, I don’t think transition is easy for anyone and I think Nick just bringing these issues to the forefront really has helped taking the power away from some of it, be advised though this will give you a ou CHC in the gut in the best way. Own your shit and take control of your life , it will get better

Way Too Long, But Not Bad

Interesting content, but there’s way too much repetition. The same stories get told across 3 chapters with the same purpose, and this occurs over and over again.

Plenty of rambling with little purpose to the majority of the text. There are jewels of wisdom peppered throughout and it was an enjoyable listen, but don’t expect any epiphanies.

The great narration and the interviews make it worth a listen. If the book was cut by 50% it would be exceptional.

Precisely what I needed to fall into my life.

I've realized recently that the general moodiness, unexplained sadness and crushing sense of not knowing what was wrong with me was a midlife transition that I'd been trying my damndest to ignore.

All the negative he was feeling, all those questions that he couldn't answer, just generally feeling lost is what I was feeling. And until I faced all that,I was not going to move forward into this new stage of my life.

Thank you for writing this. I will live my daddy to day going forward with the lessons I've learned through your words. 'Rah!

Hits the nail on the head

Completely showed parallels in my transition from the military as well as things I glossed over during that time. Highly suggested for anybody struggling with the physical and emotional pitfalls of transition.
