Publisher's Summary

The funny, heartbreaking, wonderfully told story of love, family and overwhelming loss which led Emily Dean to find hope and healing in the dog she always wanted.

Growing up with the Deans was a fabulous training ground for many things: ignoring unpaid bills, being the most entertaining guest at dinner, deconstructing poetry. It was never home for the dog Emily craved.

Emily shared the lively chaos with her beloved older sister, Rachael, her rock. Over the years the sisters' bond grew ever closer. As Rachael went on to have the cosy family and treasured dog, Giggle, Emily threw herself into unsettled adventure - dog ownership remaining a distant dream.

Then, tragically, Rachael is diagnosed with cancer. In just three devastating years Emily loses not only her sister but both her parents as well.

This is the funny, heartbreaking, wonderfully told story of how Emily discovers that it is possible to overcome the worst that life can throw at you, that it's never too late to make peace with your past and that the right time is only ever now, as she finally starts again with her very own dog - the adorable shih-tzu named Raymond.

Really enjoyed it and would recommend

Me and my Wife have listened to the Frank Skinner show for many years now and it's my favourite pod cast. I have to admit both of us did not like Emily Dean to start with, but have grown to like her and really enjoy her part on the show over the years. so I was somewhat worried that reading this book as I imagined her having a privileged back ground that might have turned me off her and my favourite show. I can only say it had the opposite effect and I like her even more.

Great listen

I loved this heart felt book from Emily.
I've been listening to her co-host with Frank for years, she is 'sunny' and funny, which the book reflects but also reveals her vulnerable side

Emily <3

After being a fan of the Frank Skinner show on Absolute radio for years, I was interested to know more about Emily than she lets on in the show. This book was a great listen, hilarious and heartbreaking. Well done Em! xoxo

rollercoaster

honestly never EVER had a book that filled with funny eccentric images and a childhood, beautiful bonds and funny stories and minute and then have me balling my eyes out the next! And all this on my commute to work. absolutely brilliant and I'm recommending it to everyone I know. Thank you

The lady behind the voice

I first came across Miss Dean while listening to Frank Skinner podcast. First impressions were not great but over time I started to hear the real person behind the self important facade. Emily seemed to soften. After listening to her book I have to congratulate her on a well written, witty and honest biography. I won’t spoil the story by giving anything away but well done Emily. I’m looking forward to your future ramblings. With Frank and hopefully in your next novel.

Moving yet uplifting

I found Emily’s story extremely moving. She is one brave lady. It is hard to listen and not put yourself in her shoes.. there were a lot of tears listening to this but also a lot of laughs and feel good moments.

Superb

I really enjoyed this insight into Emily Dean's life so far – it's both happy and very sad, so be prepared, but brilliantly narrated and leaves you wanting to meet her (and her dog)!

Very well written (and read) book.

I live in New Zealand. I’d never heard of Emily Dean. I follow a select few people on Twitter and one had reacted to some “shameless self promotion” (said with a wink) by Emily of her book. Amazon Australia allow you to return a book you don’t enjoy so I thought “Why not?” I approached it with no expectations. It was a wonderful listen and certainly not one I’ll be asking to return. Really well written, and read by the author (essentially a rule of mine for biographies). As others have written; you should expect to be moved (the title gives it away a bit). In the finish I found myself thoroughly impressed by Emily. Someone who has lifted herself up by her shoe laces, dealt with adversity and come out stronger. Very “loveable” woman and all power to her. Highly recommended.
