Story
“Well, now I’m committed,” he thought to himself after telling a national TV game show audience that he wanted to ride a motorcycle to Mongolia with his winnings. He felt the fear that commitment always induced in him; he was hoping they might have edited that bit out. Commitments are something he tried to get as far away from as possible, the only other constants in his life being twenty-five years of financial prudence, travel and motorcycle obsession. So there he was, committed to going very, very far on a motorcycle with his meager prize money. Consequently, he spent a winter on eBay and a spring in the garage preparing his $1000 KLR 650 for an uncertain life on the road.

Why do we travel, what are we looking for, and will we recognize it if we find it? With the author’s 50th birthday looming, there seemed a need for something significant to happen. Not seeing an expiry date on his birth certificate made it hard to gauge when to have a mid-life crisis, but he’d almost definitely left it too late.

On October 6, 1973, Ted Simon knew there was no going back. He loaded up his 500cc Triumph Tiger in the pouring rain and said good-bye to London. Over four years he rode 64,000 miles round the world. Breakdowns, revolutions, war, a spell in prison, and a Californian commune were all part of his experience, which was colored variously by utter despair and unimaginable joy. Reeling from a recent breakup and with only limited savings from her pub job, a tent, a few clothes, and some tools, all packed on the back of her bike, she was determined to prove herself. She had ridden bikes since her teens and was well-traveled. But nothing could prepare her for what lay ahead.

Three years later he set out into the world on his bike again, this time searching for truth on his own terms in a world that had become strangled by a climate of fear.

Since the Stone Age, the "walkabout" has been an aboriginal rite of passage. It is when adolescent boys wander aimlessly into the bush on a journey with no particular destination. During this time, they make the spiritual transition from boy to man. It's a time for self-assessment and deep thought, when he can learn about himself without the influence of his elders, friends, or family. It's a physical and psychological journey.

Publisher's Summary
Who tries to ride deep into Iraq just to see if the news reports are accurate, ends up joining a street demonstration against someone else's government, or sticks their arm between the jaws of a wild mountain wolf-dog?
After the success of his first book, In Search of Greener Grass, Graham Field hits the road again with his bargain-basement KLR650, recording his experiences in his inimitable and revealingly honest diary style. The Caucasus region is often overlooked by travelers, but Graham may inadvertently be about to change all that.
A single pivotal event can transform any journey, and accepting rather than fighting that moment can have glorious consequences for the traveler. In this instant the result ensures a fantastic exploration of eastern Europe and beyond, the discovery of a hidden gem in Georgia, and meanderings that leave us all much richer.
Ultimately, Eureka is an almost accidental realization that we cannot control our mood on the road, but merely embracing it can be the most enlightening travel experience of all.

Enjoyable for adventure motorcycle riders.
I really enjoyed the story since I am an avid long distance adventure rider. However, being American, I had to determine through context what some of the slang words used in the book actually meant. His description of the scenery, road conditions, people he encountered, etc... gave me a good visual of what he witnessed. I didn’t care for the fowl language used unnecessarily.

Graham satisfy again
Graham's first audio book was a complete joy and I felt his laughter, his humor, pain and frustration. After finishing that audio book I thought "Now here's a bloke I could see having a laugh with". He's a long hair like me, likes metal and drinks tea. tops in my book. I just finished his second audio book "Ureka" and my thought was reaffirmed. Thanks Graham for taking me on that journey with you, it was a good laugh. One side note. Despite its vague reliability, the KLR is the most wretched motorcycle ever created. I could never own anything that ugly.

cracking book
I read this book as a paperback some years ago but have just listened to it as the audiobook version, with Graham's dulcit tones narrating the journey.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and the audiobook came alive again.
It's hard to write a sequel to a brilliant book like Greener Grass, and although completely different, this book is just as good, and certainly as funny and entertaining as his original. Highly recommended if you enjoy the real adventure, done on a shoestring, without the need for the Touratech catalogue, and a cynicism for the armchair adventurers.
