Annoyed with the lack of common sense

I recently started sailing so I really wanted to like this book. However, I found that the numerous bad decisions made by the couple, from insisting on a brand new boat, built overseas, snubbing the local language, embarking on the trip during a major storm, etc, were hard to get past. The title could have been What Not to do When Sailing. Might have been easier to digest if the two were in their 20's. Just can't recommend.

This work is definitely an Escape from the Ordinar

Escape from the Ordinary weaves humor and candor in equal measure. The richness and clarity of Bradley's description of this epic journey allows the reader to feel as if he or she is sharing a bunk on the sailboat and is embedded right beside Glen and Julie on their journey both on and off the boat. At the end of the story I was both very satisfied and left wanting more - so this story is definitely not enough.

Excellent book!

I had read some of the comments about this book that were negative, so I was apprehensive about buying it. Turned out to be an excellent book with excellent narration. I would definitely recommend this to someone and will likely read it again.
Well done Julie and Janet.

From normal life to a sailing life

Very well written making it easy to get lost in the story. Throughly enjoyable experience.

Gave Up

Seriously struggled and couldn't get past chapter 5. Just boring and deep into the ordinary of book writing. The narration didn't help either.

Wonderful story but disappointing ending

This was a great story and I enjoyed it a lot! They had some wonderful adventures and it was very interesting to listen to. The ending was a little anti-climatic. I won’t give it away but I wish we could’ve finished hearing about the rest of their adventure.

The ending leaves you dissatisfied

Great story. Great narration. But it’s all for nothing as the book ends extremely abruptly. This leaves you confused and dissatisfied.

What the......!?

The story was a great read. Very descriptive, very easy to bring you along into their world. However, the ending was horrible. It ended so abruptly I kept expecting to hear this is the end of part one but instead heard this is the end of this audiobook.

Couldn’t finish, didn’t hold my interest

This is the kind of book I usually enjoy. But after a few chapters I couldn’t keep going. The story should be interesting but is written in such a dry, rigid sounding style, and narrated in such a lackluster manner I was bored. Maybe the narrator didn’t have enough to work with. Some of the descriptions of events are explained once and then strangely again in the form of an email to family. I’m disappointed, as a life long sailor I really thought that I’d enjoy this.

Overall a good book, very insightful and engaging.

I'm not a sailor so I really hoped this book wouldn't be technical and it wasn't, it's basically the author's journals - observations, thoughts, feelings, opinions, etc, - which was good. I really enjoyed this book, it takes you to places far away that you mostly wouldn't know existed. Julie Bradley clearly writes as she speaks so there was a very personal element to the language and terms. From her writings she sounds a genuinely nice person and I can imagine the many friends they made over their travels.
However, for me personally, the first chapter recalling the author's military career weren't necessary, I didn't find it relevant or interesting and I feel it added nothing to the book overall. It could have been summarised in one page I kept thinking there would be a relevance or connection but there wasn't.
I loved the sailing, discovery and adventure aspects of the book and was captivated by the descriptions of the global sailing world and all who lived in it, I also learned a bit of global trivia, places to avoid and some boat etiquette.
I immediately went onto listen to the sequel as a result of this book. I would recommend.

Relaxing and enjoyable

This book is about much more than sailing. I bought it because I love sailing and I ended up really loving the descriptions of countries and islands visited. You feel like you’re along with Julie and Glen and I felt I could almost join them for a drink in the cockpit. I highly recommend this for a relaxing listen.

Not the best of accents

Not the best of accents for this story, would have preferred an easier listening option.
