Publisher's summary

The lights are out for good....

After an EMP knocked out power around the globe, Matthew Riley and his family are finding their way to survive while realization of their dangerous new reality sinks in. It was a struggle to reunite in the immediate aftermath, but the fallout from the dangerous journey may be even worse.

Other desperate souls are converging on any place that might offer hope, and the Rileys’ hotel in Galena, Illinois, is a prime target. With food running short and medicine almost out, the Rileys will need to find supplies. But they’re not the only ones looking.

While the family works together at the hotel, Matthew’s brother-in-law, Max, works to escape from prison to reunite with his family and the relative safety they offer. But dangerous enemies have their eyes on him and may put everyone at risk.

With resources running out, family is the only bond that can be counted on. But those bonds are strained and frayed as the tensions of the new world begin to pull them apart. How can one family survive when the world has turned upside down?

Outstanding Follow-up

Jade is solely becoming my hero and I'm beginning to have to fight harder to not despise Matthew and pull for him at the same time. That is the sign of a great writer and the narrator conveying the writing.

I'm going to get book 3 because the setup for it is too much and I have to know more. highly recommend.

p.s. for anyone that had prepped for shtf you might get irritated at some aspects of the book, but don't let that pull you away from the overall story.

Family bond is everything!

Picking up where we left off from volume one. Kathleen and Allison, deciding to ride bicycles, were on their way home. Running across some bikers, Kathleen did way too much talking instead of moving on. Only a mile from home, Kathleen sent Allison home. Finally getting to Galena, Illinois, Matthew and Patton were glad they were home. Spotting Allison running towards them, yelling about her mother. Matt ran for Kathleen, getting her away from the bikers. David and Ruth, Matthew’s parent’s home, the River Rock Hotel, was the gathering point for the Riley clan. Jade was present, a sore spot with Matthew and Kathleen after her past behavior. They would have to come to terms with Jade unless they were going to turn her out. Max, who had made a deal with the prosecution, was having issues unrelated to the EMP. Giving up the Cartel for a lighter sentence, I’m sure Max would be dead by now, instead of roughed up. Anyway, Max was getting worried and he had heard that things were not much better on the outside. He decided that it may be time to try to escape before the Cartel keeps him here permanently. Kathleen was having a difficult time dealing with the killing of Andrew. She tried to keep it secret but the anxiety was obvious to everyone and they all wondered what had happened, what she was hiding. Another group, Carpenter Country, made themselves known and invited the hotel inhabitants to parley. David and Jade naïvely took them up on their offer but this turned out to be a benefit for all. 2nd in Series

I enjoy all post-apocalyptic and this one was decent and continues the characters in book 1. My favorite characters are David, Jade and now Wyatt who are strong. They all have reached the hotel including Max but then Patton is kidnapped by Colin a drug cartel dealer. Look forward to next book but hope Matthew and Kathleen get stronger to survive and protect their family. Great series

Amazing story. Writing this review after finishing all 3 in the series.
Grace is so good at writing real and flawed characters. Even her main ‘good guys’ do stupid stuff, make mistakes and just screw up from time to time. The thing is that’s how real people are. You will always learn from her stories too. Many survival lessons are to be learned here. Do yourself a favor and pick up this or any of her series, you will not regret it!
Mathew Berry is a great narrator.

Eh, good but it’s a bit far fetched.

It is unrealistic but the story is good. The females in the story act like petulant brats and talk down to their husbands like they’re children. It isn’t that way for the entire story but they are a bit over the top with it. The occurrences in the story a just kind of conveniently work out and there’s no real failure it seems. That being said, it’s still a good book and I will definitely listen to it again, just don’t expect realism to be the backbone of the story.

Unrealistically contrived

This book picks up the story begun in Erupting Trouble, and continues with the contrived and illogical actions and behaviors of the characters. Moreover, some of the characters suddenly know things they shouldn't be aware of yet.

Matthew E. Berry makes an effort to give distinctive voices to the characters, but I was surprised to hear a few mispronounced words. All this makes it pretty difficult to really get into the story.
