This new stand-alone survival thriller thrusts the most dynamic city on Earth, New York, into darkness as North America is bludgeoned by the sun's ferocity. Scientists promised a beautiful aurora providing the city that never sleeps with magnificent hues of blue and green. For three days, New Yorkers took to the streets, parks, and rooftops to enjoy the awe-inspiring spectacle. As the power grid failed, the city of New York collapsed with remarkable speed. The thin veneer of civilization was laid bare as man fought one another for survival.

Good Thriller
This is the first book I’ve listened to by the author but not my last. The story takes place in Mount Erebus in Antarctica when microbial organisms that over humans and group of scientist need to get back to non-infested place to find the cure. It has great character development my favorites were Dr Graves, Brett , Dr Hunter and the russian (Facili?). Great narration. Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys scientific apocalyptic. Erebus
The emotions, and reactions of the characters in this book are absolutely close to reality. Their experiences and challenges in this cold and brutal environment creates a story of survival. There is definitely no survival guaranteed when the simplest act of being outside without proper clothing could kill you!

Icy Undead
This book is an interesting take on a medical disaster combined with a zombie outbreak. An escaped organism trapped in the Antarctic gets loose and infects people turning them into violently aggressive hive critters. There is a lot of escape by convenience as various characters just happen to have the necessary skills to meet the current crises. Skilled characters also turn up at just the right moment. Overall the book is fairly well researched and written. The environment is believable and the plot mostly makes sense. The book does end abruptly as if the author ran out of interest in the book.
The narration is well done by the consistent and skilled Kevin Pierce. He always draws you into the story without being distracting.

A+ Zombie Horror
I love a good zombie story and I love a story set in Antarctica so this book was a winner for me right off the bat. That said, even though the content is my favorite, this story really succeeds in being action packed and scare inducing. I thought the characters were well written, people died at a good rate and the tension never lowered throughout.
Kevin Pierce is one of my top three favorite narrators on Audible. I would listen to anything he reads, his performance is always pitch perfect and incredibly satisfying. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes an action/zombie thriller! It's a great one. I do hope there is a sequel as 'Erebus' did end on a cliff hanger and I want to hear more!

Nice biological zombie thriller
I was worried that this book might drag as many of the other Antarctic thrillers I have read do, however I was pleasantly surprised! It jumped right in to the action and story. It is a bit “the thing” meets “28 days later”. A scientific crew based in Antarctica discovers a new microbe that gets unleashed unbeknownst to the remote group. They lose contact and have to figure out their way back to base, which is decimated. I enjoyed the book and the narration, i hope there is a book two as it has a bit of a cliffhanger. A fantastic thriller
Well composed, likeable and intelligent characters, and a truly scary threat.
The amount of detail in the writing really helps to connect you to the locations and equipment that the characters come across.
It is also extremely refreshing to read a story with characters whose actions are largely well thought out and logical and spend their few safe moments talking and planing instead of fighting and posturing. I genuinely cared and feared for the characters.
The narration was great. I felt like the narrator himself was one of the characters, recounting the harrowing events some years later.

Great Story, Missing Character Building
3.75 out of 5 stars
Imagine being at the edge of the world when the apocalypse breaks out. That’s what happened to the researchers and doctors on Antartica when they happen to accidentally bring to life an age-old organism that is bound to taking over.
I think my favorite thing about this book was the setting. I love when a book is set somewhere that feels out of the ordinary. An outbreak among researchers in Antartica is something that no one would know about unless they either brought it home with them or they all died and never made it back. That fascinates me and I thought that the setting of the book really played a character, too.
The characters weren’t explained too well and that made loving or losing them a little easier. I was a little worried since Bird didn’t go into a ton of detail about anyone that we were going to have a horror-like story where no one makes it out alive.
If I could change anything about the book I would just spend a little more time introducing some of the characters and giving the reader a reason to like them (and in turn, root for them to make it.) The only character that I found myself rooting for was the Russian and it was because he gave a lot more of his backstory than any other character.
The organism/infection/disease was pretty good and reminded me a bit of The Genius Plague that I just finished. I can’t really get into much detail about it without ruining the story but it felt unique compared to most “zombie-like” stories.
Overall, I thought that Erebus had a nice plot but was missing some character development. A solid 3.5 to 4 book that I did enjoy reading.
I was voluntarily provided with a copy of this audiobook - it has not affected my review in any way.

"I know Guns and science"
Gave up about halfway. It's not neccesarily a "bad book" per se, but the dialogue between character is filled with "as you know, fellow scientist/gun-nut/outdoorsman..." and hamfisted explanations of event and themes that for sure needed explaining, but there must have been a better way than what is being presenter here.
Decent enough narration without any real charm or effort, just a man with a pleasant sounding voice reading aloud what it says on the pages.

An icy horror
I enjoy apocalyptic fiction and I'm a big fan of all things polar so this book grabbed me from the very beginning. Bird has certainly done his research of humanity's presence in Antarctica and his description of McMurdo Station is spot on (if you feel inclined be sure to take a look at the Google Street View of base through Google Maps). The plot is fairly straightforward and the characters are pretty generic for this kind of tale.
Pierce's narration is adequate but some of the character voices are too similar at times making differentiating them troublesome at times. That said, all are audible and the sound is noise free.
Overall this is a worthwhile listen in my opinion.

Antartic Horror
*Received for Free*
This is my first time with anything by Steven C. Bird, and genuinely I've been impressed by it. Take a team of scientists, stick them in a remote cut off location, and unleash horror upon them (in this case, a deadly rage virus). Take elements from 28 Days later, The Thing and 30 Days of Night, and stick them in a blender.
Main reasons to read this book:
Good, Descriptive world building - Antarctica is vividly described, and you can feel the isolation
Likeable characters - some don't stick around long enough to get to know
Well paced, and well written story - Slick, and never feels like it has been padded out
The Virus doesn't just "exist" - There are justifiable reasons for it existing (even if its unlikely). I've read this during quarantine, so Virus' obviously seems very plausible at the moment.
Erebus sometimes feels like a Dennis E Taylor book (Boboverse, Outland) and that's never a bad thing.
The ending does feel a little rushed, and its disappointing you are not able to get more of a connection to the characters (there's a cast of 20? So understandable).
Kevin Pierce does a fine job at narrating, and also has a similar cadence and speaking style as Ray Porter (thus increasing the Dennis E Taylor comparisons)
Overall, an excellent read. Will be trying other Steven C. Bird works in future

This was the first book from this author that I'd heard. I would like to listen to more, I listened to the book in one evening and I just like books about survival against all odds. It was never dull and could have become a series.
