Want to learn more about caring for someone at end of life? Discover the End of Life Guideline Series by Barbara Karnes. It is a compilation of five of our most popular hospice and palliative care books that prepares its listeners for the natural, normal process of dying and grief.
The series includes, A Time to Live: Living with a Life Threatening Illness, for the newly diagnosed facing a life limiting illness. It addresses issues of comfort, nutrition, and sleep as they relate to the palliative care patient. It provides guidance to help them live the best life they can within the confines of their body and disease. Gone From My Sight: The Dying Experience with over 35 million copies sold, the "Hospice Blue Book" is the most beloved and widely used resource of its kind. This booklet guides the family through the stages of the dying process over months, weeks, days, and hours.
The Eleventh Hour: A Caring Guideline For the Hours to Minutes Before Death explains what to do and how to care for your loved one during the end of life process. Pain at End of Life: What You Need to Know About End of Life Comfort and Pain Management is intended for families and professionals dealing with narcotics and pain management as end of life approaches. Addresses fear of overdosing and addiction, around the clock administration, standardized dosages, uses of morphine, and more.
My Friend, I Care: The Grief Experience addresses the normal process of grief while offering suggestions for moving forward into living. Like all of Barbara's work, the information is conveyed in a simple, direct yet gentle manner. You can find comfort in these books even years after the death of a loved one, as we often have unresolved questions and concerns. Listen here.

Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross created her classic seminal work, On Death and Dying, to offer us a new perspective on the terminally ill. It is not a psychoanalytic study, nor is it a "how-to" manual for managing death. Rather, it refocuses on the patient as a human being and a teacher, in the hope that we will learn from him or her about the final stages of life.

Modern medical technology is allowing us to live longer and fuller lives than ever before. But with changes in the way we understand medicine come changes in the way we understand death. Once a familiar and gentle process, death has come to be something from which we shy away, preferring to fight it desperately than to accept its inevitability. Palliative care has a long tradition in Britain, where Dr. Kathryn Mannix has practiced it for 30 years. In this book, she shares beautifully crafted stories from a lifetime of caring for the dying.

Historia
For most of us, there is no harder life experience than caring for a loved one who is dying. Suzanne O'Brien realized this earlier than most during her her time working as a nurse in hospice care, often offered as a comforting alternative to a sterile hospital environment. But Suzanne saw the real financial and staffing limitation that came with hospice, and, realizing this option didn't provide all the answers, wanted to take it a step further, providing her patients and their families with the tools to approach the death of a loved one with grace, dignity, knowledge, and compassion.

Death is not waiting for us at the end of a long road. Death is always with us, in the marrow of every passing moment. She is the secret teacher hiding in plain sight, helping us to discover what matters most. Life and death are a package deal. They cannot be pulled apart, and we cannot truly live unless we are aware of death. The Five Invitations is an exhilarating meditation on the meaning of life and how maintaining an ever-present consciousness of death can bring us closer to our truest selves.

Historia
Talking about death and dying is considered taboo in polite company, and even in the medical field. Our ideas about dying are confusing at best: Will our memories flash before our eyes? Regrets consume our thoughts? Does a bright light appear at the end of a tunnel? For most people, it will be a slower process, one eased with preparedness, good humor, and a bit of faith. At the forefront of changing attitudes around palliative care is hospice nurse Hadley Vlahos, who shows that end-of-life care can teach us just as much about how to live as it does about how we die.

As much as we might try to resist, endings happen in every moment—the end of a breath, the end of a day, the end of a relationship, and ultimately the end of life. And accompanying each ending is a beginning, though it may be unclear what the beginning holds. In How We Live Is How We Die, Pema Chödrön shares her wisdom for working with this flow of life—learning to live with ease, joy, and compassion through uncertainty, embracing new beginnings, and ultimately preparing for death with curiosity and openness rather than fear.

The so-called Tibetan Book of the Dead has been renowned for centuries as a cornerstone of Buddhist wisdom and religious thought. More recently, it has become highly influential in the Western world for its psychological insights into the processes of death and dying - and what they can teach us about the ways we live our lives. It has also been found to be helpful in the grieving process by people who have recently lost their loved ones. This authoritative translation preserves the form and spirit of the original and was prepared especially for Western audiences.

Vital Information
I heard this pamphlet series recommended on the Ologies podcast by a scholar of death and dying. It is evident that the scholar recommended these readings because they are so clear, honest, accessible, and compassionate. I have a loved one who is in the process of dying, and I very much appreciate the insights in this collection of little books.
