For months I stood by, an understudy waiting in the wings, preparing for my time to shine. I never imagined he would watch in the audience that night. Canon Holt. Famous film director. Fascinating. Talented. Fine. Before I could catch my breath, everything changed. I went from backstage Broadway to centerstage Hollywood. From being unknown to my name, Neevah Saint, on everyone’s lips. Canon casts me in a star-studded Harlem Renaissance biopic, catapulting me into another stratosphere. But stars shine brightest in the dead of night.

Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

This beautifully constructed family saga spans three generations set all within the macabre world of the civil war era American funeral industry where weepers, warners, death photographers and the new practice of embalming the dead dwelled. For generations, the women of the Fenn family have been traditional “weepers”; paid mourners who attend wakes and weep for the dead. Their counterparts, the men of the True family, are undertakers, or “warners.”

Publisher's Summary
In this compelling third saga of The Black Series, Joan Vassar returns to Upper Canada,1862. While on a mission with the legendary Black, James comes face to face with a dark beauty enslaved on the Mickerson plantation. Freedom and love are within his grasp, until ill-fated circumstances separate the two. When he is severely wounded in a violent uprising, James’ life is forever changed. Scarred both physically and emotionally, he tries to put behind him the failures of the last year.
When life at the fort is threatened, James and his brothers are called upon for a dangerous mission that could jeopardize their hard-earned freedom. The men embark on a treacherous journey that will take them to the Union Capital and then on to their final stop: The Hunter Plantation, where bitter enemies and reckonings await payment. As the men follow a path of murder and intrigue, who will live and who will die remains to be seen.
Emancipating James reveals the complicated facets of the human soul exposed against the backdrops of Civil War, slavery, and romance.

Let’s Set the Mood Right Quick:
Emancipating James by Joan Vassar
Drink: Anguish and Regret Cocktail
Music: Ready For Love by India Arie, Let’s Go by Trick Daddy ft. Lil Jon and Twista, 3Way by Teyana Taylor ft. Ty Dolla $ign
Audible: Jakobi Diem: Jakobi performed in this story; there is no other way to say it. The way his voice became these characters was remarkable. Coming into book three the voices don’t change. James’s voice has remained with that gravelly deep tone from book one. No matter who the character is once Jakobi begins talking it’s easy to know who the person is because he gives each character their own identity with his voice. The way he did Bainesworth’s accent is especially noteworthy. It was like nothing we’ve heard from him before. With each story in this series, he continues to impress us. The audible is a must.
James: If, “don’t let the pretty face fool you,” was a person it would be James. He’s truly deadly. He’s vicious, headstrong, and can be downright cold. But he’s also kind, funny, and a fierce protector. James has never backed away from using his looks and charms to get in where he needs to be.
Abigail (Abby): If, “not quick to trust,” was a person it would be Abby. Abigail had a kind sweet nature, but she struggled to open up with the other women in the Fort. However, once she opened herself up, she found what she’d been missing the whole time.
The Women of the Fort: If, “Simon’s Angels,” was a group of women it would be the Women of the Fort. These ladies understood that the protection of the Fort can’t only fall on the men. They realized that they couldn’t only be beautiful, but that they also had to be fierce.
Jeremiah (The Black Cracker): If, “this n*gga,” was a person it would be Jeremiah. He couldn’t seem to fathom seeing past the plantation or see himself in any of the people he oppressed. He truly acted as if he was a white slaver in a black man’s body.
Callie: If, “too smart for her own damn good,” was a person it would be Callie. Callie was well read, but sometimes she weaponized her knowledge. This doesn’t take away from her inner strength or her will to love a man who at times wasn’t easy to love.
Edward Jr. (EJ): If, “wanting your cake and to eating it too,” was a person it would be EJ. He wasn’t afraid to ask for what he wanted, or to fight for it. He was very comfortable in his own skin but was rooted in traditions.
Nettie and Suzanne (The Wives): If, “stand by your man,” were two women it would be Nettie and Suzanne. At first, they said that wasn’t their cup a tea, but they drinkin it now.
Book 3 in the Black Series did not disappoint. This book had many story lines going at once and the complexity was awe inspiring to experience. Ms. Vassar has proven herself to be the Jedi Master of plot twist. With all the ups and downs in this story it’s an emotional rollercoaster that shouldn’t be missed. These characters will have you screaming at them, falling in love with them, crying with them, laughing with them, and cheering with them. This is not just a must read, but a must experience, because trust the whole Black Series is proving to be an experience.

a poor third
The first two books are phenomenal. This one crashed and burned like Game of Thrones. Why all the weird white people sex? The Lincoln thing was unnecessary and underdeveloped. Why not just call Jeremiah "daddy." The whole thing seemed rushed and wordy. The real win? Mr. Diem's voice is audio butter--it's delicious on everything. 🤤 It was 147 character voices of yum.
