what's with the french accent?

I would have scored the narration higher if it were not for the totally rediculous french accent. How do mother and son have a french accent, when the mother is originally from wisconsin and the family (pre divorce) lived in various non-french speakers countries?
The story was strong enough to stand on its own, without adding the accent.
