Publisher's summary

This program includes a bonus conversation between Brian Herbert, Kevin J. Anderson, and Scott Brick.

A legend begins in Dune: The Duke of Caladan, first in The Caladan Trilogy by New York Times best-selling authors Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson.

Leto Atreides, Duke of Caladan and father of the Muad’Dib. While all know of his fall and the rise of his son, little is known about the quiet ruler of Caladan and his partner Jessica. Or how a Duke of an inconsequential planet earned an emperor’s favor, the ire of House Harkonnen, and set himself on a collision course with his own death. This is the story.

Through patience and loyalty, Leto serves the Golden Lion Throne. Where others scheme, the Duke of Caladan acts. But Leto’s powerful enemies are starting to feel that he is rising beyond his station, and House Atreides rises too high. With unseen enemies circling, Leto must decide if the twin burdens of duty and honor are worth the price of his life, family, and love.

A Macmillan Audio production from Tor Books

"The audio version is an easy listen. The quick, action packed chapters are well performed, and as the disparate story lines begin to come together it's hard to press pause. Narrator Scott Brick's deep and interesting voice adds more pull to the quieter parts of the story.... All in all, a fun book and a great performance." (Booklist)

"Characters are imbued with heroic voices, delivering colorful cadences that catch the ear. Scenes are masterfully undergirded by mounting tension and sinister manipulation...[narrator Scott] Brick turns in a rewarding performance." (AudioFile Magazine)

At three minutes long, the trailer itself is a beautiful masterpiece, and it teases many of the important characters and aspects from the story. I keep hoping they will measure up...

As a life long fan of Frank Herbert's work I wanted so badly to enjoy the work being done by his son and Kevin J. Anderson, Unfortunately these books are predictable, and puerile. The main characters in no way act, think or behave as if they are from the original series. These might be good listens for people with no awareness of the originals but I would hazard anyone that loves Frank's work to STAY AWAY.

That was mean!!!!!

There is no way for me to write this without spoilers so I will keep this brief. Buy the book. It has a slow burn. But once it gets good you will be yelling at your device for hours.... Buy the book!!!

Disappointing.

Least favorite of any of the Dune series books. Disjointed, implausible storylines even for science fiction.

The least 'Dune' of the post Frank Herbert books

First let me say that the Dune universe is an addiction for me so I will be getting the other books of this trilogy. Also, the negatives of the performance category have nothing to do with Scott Brick and more to do with the tin can they made him perform into.

Overall it isn't the worst book I've ever read, but it is the worst Dune book I've ever read. This is not a fast paced book, this is simple and plodding. It felt like a chore listening to it.

Performance was hampered by very poor acoustics wherever they had Scott Brick recording. Also, it is quite obvious where lines were changed/added to the story because they couldn't be bothered to match the audio level to the main recording. The audio added to the story makes this book feel like a rushed cash grab.

Story is always hard to rate without spoilers and is very subjective so I'll just say that, in my opinion, the writers have very well established characters going against everything we know about them from Elder Herbert's series. It made the entire book feel ridiculous and implausible at best.

I hope they do better with book two.

A shadow of Frank’s Dune...

I was ver unimpressed by plot and story decisions in this book. As the story of House Atreides the year before Frank Herbert’s Dune, it was very weak in presentation of what I thought was presented of Duke Leto, Thufir Hawat, Duncan Idaho, and Gurney Halleck. Paul is well done in my mind. But Duke Leto jumps to decisions uninformed. Thufir is unaware of things obviously of security interest to House Atreides, completely out of character with the man and his famed spy network in Dune. Duncan, a Swordmaster of Ganiz, didn’t prepare for a demonstrated tactic of an enemy in the raid on Caladan. Booo! Very weak. It did also do good with Jessica and Leto too. Otherwise I might not have given it 3 stars. Therefore I would recommend it to non-military knowledgeable reader interested in Leto, Paul and Jessica’s relationship or someone that has not read the original Dune series yet. That’s my two cents....

Loved the story, the performance not so much.

I really liked the book, and the way it expands the Dune Universe. Duke Leto Atreides is one of my favourite characters throughout the series. I eagerly await for the next to book. The performance of the reader however was somewhat off. In some places it sounded as if it had been recorded in patches that where clumsily brought together. Resulting in some frases and paragraphs sounding very different in quality to the rest of the audiobook.
