Publisher's Summary

In the spring of 1844, the Wells family receives a letter from a distant relative, the wealthy landowner Nicholas Van Ryn. He has invited one of their daughters for an extended visit at his Hudson Valley estate, Dragonwyck. Eighteen-year-old Miranda, bored with her local suitors and commonplace life on the farm, leaps at the chance for escape. She immediately falls under the spell of the master and his mansion, mesmerized by the Gothic towers, flowering gardens, and luxurious lifestyle - unaware of the dark, terrible secrets that await.

It was ok

This book was ok. Kept me entertained while working. It was extremely slow though. Only good for background listening. I walked away for about an hour at one point and when I came back I hadn't missed anything.

Lovely story

I've always loved this book. From a simpler time. The reader did a wonderful job. So many readers have grating voices or are not suited to the story. This was perfect.

Good Gothic

This is a good gothic mystery. Some might find the pacing slow, but it was written in a different era, and it shows. This doesn’t make it an unenjoyable read; it’s just not contemporary fiction. Give it a shot and then perhaps check out the other Anya Seton books.

Too slow for me

I’m 5 hours in and haven’t fully been sucked in to the story; nor seen romance or real relationships develop. Their is the possibility of an obvious illicit romance, subtle relationships growing yet, I’m out of patience to find out what comes next.

Weakest characters ever created

I had to finish it, because I’m a “finisher,” but it was painful. Narrator was good.
