Publisher's Summary

New York Times best-selling author of The Good Girl Mary Kubica returns with an electrifying and addictive tale of deceit and obsession.

In downtown Chicago, a young woman named Esther Vaughan disappears from her apartment without a trace. A haunting letter addressed to "My Dearest" is found among her possessions, leaving her friend and roommate, Quinn Collins, to wonder where Esther is and whether or not she's the person Quinn thought she knew....

Meanwhile, in a small Michigan harbor town an hour outside Chicago, a mysterious woman appears in the quiet coffee shop where 18-year-old Alex Gallo works as a dishwasher. He is immediately drawn to her charm and beauty, but what starts as an innocent crush quickly spirals into something far more dark and sinister than he ever expected.

As Quinn searches for answers about Esther and Alex is drawn further under the stranger's spell, master of suspense Mary Kubica takes listeners on a taut and twisted thrill ride that builds to a stunning conclusion and shows that no matter how fast and far we run, the past always catches up with us in the end.

Interesting, original, and kept me guessing

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was such a good mystery and I couldn't figure out what was going on. The characters were really interesting. I'm surprised by some of the reviews that are negative. I have written plenty of negative reviews of best sellers, but I was delighted to discover this book. I bought it because I really liked The Good Girl and I thought this was even better. The narrators were excellent and well matched to the characters. A real treat.

Great book, Bad performers!

I really enjoyed this storyline. It was very interesting, although the it takes a few chapters to get fully invested in the characters. A disappearing friend, a new girl to town, it is very intriguing. I really liked all the back stories that came to light throughout. It really kept things going. There were a lot of twists and turns that were very unexpected, but some scenes were dragged out with too many details.

Also, the performers just didn't capture the characters the way I would have if I read the book instead. They didn't have enough emotion. They probably are the reason I only gave the book 4 stars.

Kubica Does Not Disappoint

Wow! Great, suspenseful story told in two voices. This book is made for audio. The narrators are perfect. You won't be able to stop. Now I just want to sit and ponder it.

This book makes me want to cry, why?

The boring story, monotonous, unnatural narration and unbelievable- supernatural concept ... awful. I'm totally NOT buying bargain books again! This is the second waste of money in 3 weeks.

Annoying male narrator

Loved the female narrator and the story was very good. The male narrator sounded like a high school thespian wanna-be, emphasizing every main word with a theatrical flourish that didn't fit his voice or the story. It was distracting and completely irritating.

Are you kidding?

Awful. Awful. Awful. Can’t believe I listened to the whole thing. Kept hoping it would get better. It didn’t!

Like nails on a chalk board

The narrator is SO ANNOYING. Her voice is terrible, she forgets when she is speaking as herself and uses a male impersonation, and the way she over-enunciates is maddening.

Also, the love story seems to be tacked on as an afterthought, and with the author's obsession with how "rare" it is to have ombré hair, it seems a bit dated.

Great Story, Distracting Use of Language

The story was great. Very inventive, suspenseful, and well worth reading. I've liked everything I've read by this author. But there's something that bugs me. A lot.

She uses a lot of words in the wrong way. Like she got a word-of-the-day calendar and is trying to work them into her story, and while she knows what they mean, she doesn't know how to use them. A person who is shivering from cold is not palpitating. Moribund is not what the grass is doing. There are a lot of examples of this, and to me it was distracting.

The book was good. The writing is very good - except for that. I will keep reading Mary Kubica's work, and I will likely also keep rolling my eyes at her bad word choices. Seriously. Editor. Help, please.

Just okay

Fans of this author's previous books need to know that this book is definitely not in that league. It's okay...mediocre at best, but it just never got me the way her other books did. If you know this author's style, you know that there is a slow reveal of information which could potentially lead you in a hundred different directions and the reader spends a good bit of time speculating about all the possibilities, or at least I do. There is some of that in this book, however, I felt quite let down by the resolution of the story.
I thought the development of the character of Alex was well done and I thought it was the most noteworthy aspect of the book. Unfortunately, the narrator of the character was, to put it gently, not good. The female narrator was average.
I found the book entertaining, just not something I would necessarily recommend.

Don’t You Cry

Too slow and too wordy with a weak story to boot.

Not great...but not terrible.

This book wasn't shocking but it certainly wasn't Mary Kubica's best work. I quite enjoyed the Good Girl - but this seemed boring and predictable in comparison. The male narrator is ok... though it is hard to imagine a teenage boy when you are listening to his voice. Also, he is the same narrator as Nick from Gone Girl. I found it hard to separate the two.

Overall, the story line was fairly weak and (most) of the characters were underdeveloped. I wouldn't recommend it.

Kubica is growing.. (slowly)

im still trying to decide if i dislike the voices, or if the voices excelled at portraying the characters.. like when you watch a movie and distaste the bad guy, realising its not the actor you hate, but becus the actor did such a good job to make u hate the character..

i read a review that stated there were so many twists and turns and the author did something i havent experienced yet. usually a twist comes out of nowhere.. but in this book a twist would swoop in and i would think i knew the secret and would be unsatisfied, then another twist would come in and id think once again.... oh okay, well now i know so ehh..and then bam another twist.

would have preferred to read this book rather than listen to it.. but it is an easy read..

I can see this as a movie oneday.
