Publisher's summary

Discover the 44 laws of life that are the missing link between the desire to meditate and the motivation needed to maintain a regular meditation practice, process the emotional fallout of meditative experiences, and find spiritual fulfillment.

Meditation isn’t rocket science - but keeping a steady practice can sure feel like it. Many have sought the transformation and mindfulness that meditation promises to unlock, only to get frustrated and discouraged. As it turns out, meditation isn’t as easy or relaxing as some claim.

Don’t Just Sit There! is a profoundly revamped guide that will overhaul your meditative practice by acknowledging and helping you work through the not-so-peaceful side of achieving peace. It’s organized around the 44 laws of human experience, with a week-by-week guide to productively processing each one. Centered on identity, purpose, life experience, human nature, expansion, and the world we live in, these laws can become obstacles in moments of quiet solitude without the tools to properly face them.

Meditators of all levels and styles of reflection can benefit from this guidance on how to master and overcome the 44 laws and establish a lifelong practice. By confronting the emotional, soul-shaking nature of meditation, you can deepen your spiritual understanding throughout your personal life and leave the difficulties of motivation behind.

Not a meditation book, but thought provoking.

I feel I need to pull out the themes of this book and make them incredibly obvious for those who might be fascinated and starstruck by the book and it’s “philosophical” advice and therefore be misdirected about meditation. This certainly is not a book about meditation. Its more of a self-help book for those who are looking for a way to improve their life. If that is what you are going for, for have at it! But do not think of it as a reference for meditation.

Anyways, a major theme of this book is if you follow your soul, then your life should be blissfully happy and full of peace. It does not really describe the how the author senses the soul or how to follow it within oneself. It states that it floats above us somewhere and is this vulnerable and loving thing that we are encouraged to follow for the best life. She talks about the soul as this other entity almost like a third person that hangs around us. So it seems like our soul is a somewhat detached part of us and therefore not really us. I’m confused by this explanation.

Another major theme of this book is the fourth way to enlightenment. Yet again, the discussion of this idea is somewhat vague and the author does not really discuss the ideas of the original philosopher George Gurdjieff. She implies in her writing that she uses him as a basis for her ideas, but does not describe what he taught. The author suggests that by following her advice, which are the 44 laws, then you’ll achieve this fourth type of enlightenment.

This fourth type of enlightenment seems to be a materialistic enlightenment, where the author demonstrates a fascination of materialistic things, seems to be bragging about how great her life is, and how she’s achieved materialistic bliss. She talks about how her own success story, like most self-help books do, in which their previous life was shit and now its sunshine and rainbows. I guess this type of story is required for most self-help books where the ultimate means of this narrative is to entice you to follow their path to glory.

I am not sure how these 44 “laws” of the universe were created, but they are definitely interesting. They definitely provoke insight into yourself if you’re looking to be more introspective about your own habits and flaws, but I would be wary about following a few of these. A couple seem to be a little bit contradictory to one another. Some tell you to follow your emotions, while others tell you to completely ignore them all together. She gives stories about clients who follow these laws and achieved a better place in their lives, but most of the end morals inevitably seem to be that you will date or marry the person of your dreams. So if you were looking for that type of thing as well as a ballin’ lifestyle, congrats on picking up this book.

good, but a bit presumptuous

it's a fun book full of decemt philosiphical advice, and the author is cool and tells good stories. I could feel her ego abbit too much though, which makes this book a little bit annoying for some. tried to listen with my wife, but she couldn't stand the self glorification.
