About this listen

The day before Halloween 2004 was the last day on Earth for respected, well-liked college professor Fred Jablin. That morning, a neighbor discovered his body lying in a pool of blood in the driveway of Jablin's Virginia home. Police immediately turned their attentions to the victim's ex-wife, Piper, a petite, pretty Texas lawyer who had lost a bitter custody battle and would do anything to get her kids back. But Piper was in Houston, 1,000 miles away, at the time of the slaying and couldn't possibly have been the killer...could she?

So began an investigation into one of the most bizarre cases Virginia and Texas law enforcement agencies had ever encountered: a twisted conspiracy of lies, rage, paranoia, manipulation, and savage murder that would ensnare an entire family - including two lethally close look-alike sisters - and reveal the shocking depravities possible when a dangerously disordered mind slips into madness.

Welcome to true crime satisfaction!

For context, I listen to true crime audiobooks and podcasts all day, every day. It's some sort of fascination of mine--and I am embarrassingly versed in the genre. I LOVED THIS BOOK--and I *rarely* say that about true crime books. Most have tons of flaws. Not this guy.

Bullet points to condense enthusiasm:
• A fairly unknown story
• Insane, batpoop characters who are SO interesting
• Great narrator--clearly knows where the dips are, and when paragraphs end
• Entire thing not just court trial proceedings
• C'mon, Ann Rule loves it. Freakin' Ann Rule!

Use your credit. So satisfying.

Narration unbearable

Tolerable when she wasn’t reading dialogue. Why did anyone allow her to botch the dialogue throughout the book? It’s so bad, I feel sorry for the author.

Mispronounced words can ruin an experience!

Great story! As a Virginia resident, and former resident of the Richmond metropolitan area, I remember this story. The author’s research was great. I only wished that the reader had done the SAME! It is hen-RI-co!! It is a long I and to hear it wrong SO OFTEN was like listening to nails on a chalkboard! It’s a simple thing to check out. This drove me crazy! Very disappointed!

Good read!

If you could sum up Die, My Love in three words, what would they be?

I love reading true stories! It gives a reminder of what "different people" are out there!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Cry. It is a shame that there is murder!

Any additional comments?

not as good as other Kathryn Casey true crime.

the voice of the narrator made me want to scratch my own eyes out or drive my car off of a bridge. Will never listen to another book with this narrator. terrible accents, forced and fake.

Mediocre at Best

This is a long drawn out account. The players are not that complicated as told. The narrator is very poor, one of the least appealing I’ve heard in a long time. Save your credit.

Interesting story, annoying reader

Kathryn Casey is a reliably good writer. Too bad the reader mars this audiobook by trying waaaaay too hard. Mostly her tone is that of a female Joe Friday (under 50’s, Dragnet, look it up). New Yorkers all sound like longshoremen, except when they sound like they’re from Boston. Apparently all Southern women simper and whine. She calls the Jewish prayer for the dead Ka-DISH, like something from the deli. Will finish with 2 hours to go, but it’s beginning to grate on my ears.

Good story, dreadful narration of male voices.

Where does Die, My Love rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The actual story behind Die, My Love is intriguing and well written. But the narrator nearly ruined the book for me.

What other book might you compare Die, My Love to and why?

I enjoy many true crime novels and this one ranks up with the best of them in terms of the story.

How could the performance have been better?

The narration was irritatingly bad, the female narrator does a spectacularly awful job at trying to imitate male voices. Each male character is dreadful in 'his' own unique way by this narrator, including one man appearing to have a lisp. Several men are given over the top New Jersey accents, while other men appear to be southern drawlers. Just really bad.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Die, My Love

Any additional comments?

Please get a different narrator, an otherwise really enjoyable read was distracting and at times, almost painfully laughable.
