Rachel Van Dyken
A dark mafia tale of love and redemption by Rachel Van Dyken, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Eagle Elite series
With blood on my hands, I held her.
With death in my soul, I took from her.
With the devil in my heart, I coveted her.
There are many definitions of Hell.
My list was exhaustive, my definitions tragic.
Tonight I was adding something new to the very top.
Girl number six thirty-two.
She arrived on my birthday, the same day, every year: I play Russian Roulette and pull the trigger.
She was my omen.
My end game.
She made it personal.
And for the first time in my life, I gave in.
A virgin mob boss with no soul.
My name is Andrei Petrov.
They call me the devil.
All I want is for the pain to end.
All she wants is for me to share it.
I am the last remaining heir to a dynasty that should burn in Hell.
And my last wish remains for it to die with me.

Plenty of drama, violence, dark, abuse, sex trafficking, and torture.
MMC was a brooding alpha male, virgin, demanding, working to stop sex trafficking, wore gloves because he couldn’t touch skin and had a painful childhood with his father which left him with scars that are not visible. FMC was also sexually traumatized growing up by her brother and fell hard for the MMC. There was a lot of humor despite everything happening. They are still working hard to stop no cheating or angst just a slow burn. Male narrator voice is fantastic.

First of all the notion that Andrei was a mafia boss who is also a virgin almost made me leave after the first couple of chapters. I’m glad I stuck in there. It may just be the empath in me or the fact that I knew someone who was physically pained by human touch that let me accept this. But the more I heard about his shit family I ended up feeling bad for him even as what he does disgusts us both. What a horrible inner war. I couldn’t even reconcile that he was blonde with blue eyes because I pictured him dark like his soul. But I ended up like his captive falling in love with his trauma and toxicity. CRIED REAL TEARS when he pushed her away trying to save her. When he attempted to question whether she was working for her brother hurt BUT not as bad as when he was trying to let her go before his “family” came. Devastated. Awake at 4am crying like a lunatic over their panic.
I loved Alice. I loved her so much that I was afraid for her nearly this entire story. When Phoenix told her to decide whether she wanted to be all in because it “she half assed if Andrei would murder her and sleep in her blood” I almost passed out. I have read a million of these books, I am no delicate flower. We have all heard the new spins on the old “If I can’t have you no one can” game, but to hear the consequences stated so blatantly, and without any question that it was a certainty, was jarring. She’s 21. Her brain isn’t even fully developed and she has to decide in 24 hours if she wants to stay at the monsters side FOREVER or run and hope he never looked for her. The blame was too much. She would be dead either way with no protection from anyone why make THIS her fault. Smh. Phoenix was doing the most and up to that point I was believing him useless to the story. I even thought why is this old man in young business. Only to find he is literally like 25 himself. Wild. But she chose Andrei anyway. She chose the monster and molded to him as best she could. She really showed what she was made of and it endeared her to me. She even found a way to love unconditionally despite everything and I admire that. I found myself praying for their HEA at all costs and I was so glad this wasn’t a cliffhanger or money grabbing sequel. Perfect the way it was.
Of course after I finished this I found out there was an entire prequel series I could have avoided confusion by listening to first LOL. But I found a favorite in this story so I’ll definitely check out more.
