Publisher's summary

A wealthy laird’s guests are trapped in his estate during a furious storm - but when the laird turns up dead, Scotland’s most quick-witted but unambitious policeman, Hamish Macbeth, is on the case, in this delightful new short story in M.C. Beaton's New York Times best-selling series.

When Sergeant Hamish Macbeth is sent to investigate reports that the wealthy new laird of the remote Naglar House has disappeared, northwest Scotland is hit by the worst storm in living memory. The road is washed away, phone lines are down, mobile reception is dead, and his police radio is out of order. He is trapped with the laird's high-class house guests. Then he discovers the laird's body.

Forced to remain overnight at the house, Hamish interviews each of the guests and pieces together an alarming picture of clandestine infidelity, vicious jealousy, deadly revenge, lust, greed, and fear. It begins to look like all of the guests had good reason to want the laird dead, but which one of them actually did the deed?

Shorter than normal.

This was well done but much shorter story and a bit more predictable than previous books.

I’ve loved each and every Hamish Macbeth but…

I’ve loved all each and every one of the Hamish Macbeth stories however, the change in narrator was too much for me…a different rhythm threw me off. Story was great as always, but I think I would have preferred to read the book myself in print, rather than listen to this narrator…

Awful narration and too short

I know MC Beaton died and she left her writing to a trusted author but even the last book was a disappointment as Angela was in one split second scene, suddenly Pricilla’s dad “admires” him, Blair literally walks away unscathed again and Hamish is left at the…oh forget it…it wasn’t the best…but this one…oy ANOTHER change in narrators…this one seems to go in and out of an American or some other accent that is NOT Scottish…the guy sounds like he does peppy commercials for a living. It’s sad enough our beloved series is coming to an end but couldn’t we at least have our Hamish (the narrator and the character)

Just Right!

I really enjoyed this quick read/listen. The storytelling was right in line with the Hamish MacBeth we have all come to love. His character was spot-on! Hope to have additional books by Green. He is carrying the torch very well.

A short story

I wish I had known this was a short story before I paid for it. The story is ok, but without the character and plot development I’ve become accustomed to with this series.

Eh

My main complaint is with this new narrator. You could knock me down with a feather if he is actually a Scot. His accent is very stage-y. But worse than that, he doesn't differentiate his voice enough between the characters and so it was really hard to follow along and know who was supposed to be speaking. The storyline was okay, but unfolded much differently than a classic Hamish Macbeth.

A better voice performance

I enjoy Beaton’s Agatha Raisin books and was disappoint a bit with the Hamish mysteries. It’s ok and this one has a good voice performance compared to the first two in the series. Just love Agatha Raisin so much and was hoping for so much.
