Publisher's Summary

From the show's creators comes the groundbreaking novel inspired by the Broadway smash hit Dear Evan Hansen.

Dear Evan Hansen,

Today's going to be an amazing day, and here's why....

When a letter that was never meant to be seen by anyone draws high school senior Evan Hansen into a family's grief over the loss of their son, he is given the chance of a lifetime: to belong. He just has to stick to a lie he never meant to tell: that the notoriously troubled Connor Murphy was his secret best friend.

Suddenly, Evan isn't invisible anymore - even to the girl of his dreams. And Connor Murphy's parents, with their beautiful home on the other side of town, have taken him in like he was their own, desperate to know more about their enigmatic son from his closest friend. As Evan gets pulled deeper into their swirl of anger, regret, and confusion, he knows that what he's doing can't be right, but if he's helping people, how wrong can it be?

No longer tangled in his once-incapacitating anxiety, this new Evan has a purpose. And a website. He's confident. He's a viral phenomenon. Every day is amazing. Until everything is in danger of unraveling, and he comes face-to-face with his greatest obstacle: himself.

A simple lie leads to complicated truths in this big-hearted coming-of-age story of grief, authenticity, and the struggle to belong in an age of instant connectivity and profound isolation.

Critic Reviews

"[A] particularly authentic first-person narration about family dynamics, the importance of kindness, and the horrors of not fitting in at high school.... A must-read." (Publishers Weekly)

"Yep, the hit musical will make you cry just as much in book form." (Entertainment Weekly)

"Even in book form, Evan Hansen's story sings. Required reading, especially for anyone who's ever needed to be found." (Becky Albertalli, number-one New York Times best-selling author of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda and Leah on the Offbeat)

One of the most emotional books I have ever read.

A wonderful, Emotional and heartwrenching journey.

A story that instantly connected with me and kept me captivated until the close.

Dear Evan Hansen has become my obsession.
The novel, the Play, but most of all the soundtrack.
if you haven't experienced any of these Emotional masterpieces, you owe it to yourself to check any/all of them out.

experience all the feels.

Thank you Evan Hansen.

Amazing narrators, heartwrenching story

Ben Levi Ross and Mike Faist are PHENOMENAL NARRATORS. And Mallory singing was the icing on the cake. Loved hearing more about Connor. Loved hearing Mike again. If you like the musical, or the Original Broadway cast recording, you'll love this, it's basically the musical but MORE. And Connor. Oh Connor ;-; I don't wanna spoil it but my heart broke about 500 more times after hearing more from him.

Thank you to the authors for writing this. Thank you for Miguel. I am a MESS.

This book.

I'm not an emotional person, in fact, it causes some problems in my relationship. I didn't cry throughout the entirety of this book. However, I am currently having a breakdown because of it. This book is absolutely incredible, I love it. There were moments where I, someone who has performed in plays and in talent shows in school, was tempted to stop the audiobook because of the intense "I can't look" syndrome I was getting from the book. That's a good thing. It's a great thing.

At least give this book a try. And if you have some spare change, pick it up. You won't regret it.

Love this book!

What a great story! Very well written. Great narration also! loved how we heard from Connor. Nice to hear music. I would wat to know what happens next like there is a potential for Evan to be someone successful and will use his letters as a model to help others.. He can start a blog or in a newspaper "Dear Evan Hanson" for teens/people to send him their letters. 2 thumbs up!

I’m in actual tears

I have always been a huge fan of the show, but when I saw that it was being turned into a book, I was so beyond excited, hoping to learn of Evan and Connor’s backstories in a way that the musical wasn’t able to do, and boy, it did all that and more, and having the story read to me by an actual Evan Hansen and Connor Murphy only made the emotions so much more real and raw. This book caused me to fall in love with the story all over again, in a brand new way.
Now, if you excuse me, I’m going to go listen to the cast album again and cry some more.

Realistic look into lives of current-day teens

A current and modern view of emotions and feelings felt by young adults. It was so well told, it was as if you could feel the angst, pressure & intimidation experienced by the characters. While funny at times, it realistically dealt with the serious subject matter of teen suicide. Very well done.

Best... Book... Ever

Amazing reader, amazing plot. This will make you laugh until someone calls an ambulance. Or cry until the same thing happens. (But just a warning, there is some swearing, but it's very mild.)

Heartfelt, well-written and great narration

Really loved the narration, Since the whole story is set on a huge lie it is hard at times to listen to. It reminds me of 13 reasons why-- really gets in the mind of feeling alone and being a teenager. Seeing the musical next month so I'll see how it compares.

enjoyable and hope to see musical

After weeks and listening to hours of the soundtrack I knew I needed to get this book. the audio is fantastic and I highly recommend it. Although Evan make some poor choices I could honestly understand his intentions were good. The story is well paced and gives just enough idle information.
