Story
On a desolate beach in far northern Scotland, the winter storms have been washing up all manner of things since time began. But buried in the centre of one smaller iceberg is a shard of ancient Viking pottery telling a partial tale of a hidden mysterious island beyond the ice and mist, that was home to a great treasure and even greater horrors. Thawing in the same block of ice was a rotting flap of skin that refused to be identified but had similar skin patterns to a creature not seen for 100 million years.

Publisher's summary
Like the "Dark Continent" of Africa, the dark island of Madagascar holds many chilling secrets. One of them is a long-thought extinct species of dinosaurs living at the country's core.
A massive earthquake rocks the mountain range within the Andringitra National Park. The splitting Earth reveals a network of tunnels, hidden away for millennia. Responding to the series of violent upheavals, a pack of hypersensitive predators flee their subterranean home; frenzied and hungry, they head for the surface.
Former Navy SEAL Ian Hunt begrudgingly accepts an offer to lead an exploratory team. What they uncover is the find of a lifetime... if they survive long enough to tell anyone.
Dinosaurs are alive and well at the heart of the dark island.

Wasted Potential
A trend I've noticed with these "lost world" stories is that there is little substance beyond a team of scientists/explorers trekking into unknown territory and getting attacked by virtually everything. There's no sense of adventure or discovery to me, just characters getting eaten before they're developed enough for me to care about them. What'd I'd like to see from a story like this is some time spent on the researchers actually studying the environment. There's a lot of worldbuilding potential with this kind of thing that I think is wasted on overemphasizing action.
I also did not like the audiobook narrator. He tended to read with a lot of awkward mid-sentence pauses and his attempts at the various accents featured in the story were pretty cringy.

Good For Teenagers
I feel this story has been told so many times, this is a good book for teenagers who are new to the storyline. The narration was very slow, lots of pauses and I think one was supposed to be an Australian.

bit of a slog
I didn't have huge hopes for this book and was still pretty disappointed unfortunately. the narrator made it seem like the characters were constantly joking even in a life or death moment just by his inflections.
the entire story sounded like it was written as a year 8 school assignment.

Fine, far fetched fable…but narration leaves much to be desired.
I bought this book knowing fully what to expect from Matt James, having just finished his novel “Sub Zero”…and I got precisely what I had predicted.
Straightforward writing with no wasted words, good characterisation and a story so far fetched even the bad was good.
The downside of this experience was not in the writing, it was in the narration. While Michael Lesley has a fine voice (being Australian myself, his interpretation of Abigail’s “Aussie” accent leaves a LOT to be desired), the pacing of his reading threw me off BIG TIME. So many unnecessary pauses at the most in opportune times and oddly placed inflections took me right out of the world setting I should have, by all accounts, been immersed in.
I have no idea, whatsoever, if that was a one-off or if it’s just his style but I was not receptive to it at all.

When treasure hunters excavate the long-lost wreck of the Steamship Arcadia from a Kansas corn field, a buried creature awakens - a mindless brute made of accursed earth, shaped like a man, but in no way mortal. A century and a half after its creation, the golem’s sole mission resumes: to assassinate a savage pro-slavery guerilla commander named “Bloody Bill” Wolcott. Story
Raynham Place has been home to a number of mysterious occurrences. From its start as a battlefield through its time as a tuberculosis hospital and even in its current incarnation as an apartment complex, the grounds here have been awash in blood and instability. When two friends decide to move in to Raynham together, a wound that they share opens wide and threatens their sanity. But they're not alone. When a sacrifice is made, the first freely given in ages, the truth behind Raynham's legends finally surfaces.

Story
From the best-selling author of the Sandman Slim series, a lush, dark, stand-alone fantasy built off the insurgent tradition of China Mieville and M. John Harrison - a subversive tale that immerses us in a world where the extremes of bleakness and beauty exist together in dangerous harmony in a city on the edge of civility and chaos. The Great War is over. The city of Lower Proszawa celebrates the peace with a decadence and carefree spirit as intense as the war’s horrifying despair.

Story
When treasure hunters excavate the long-lost wreck of the Steamship Arcadia from a Kansas corn field, a buried creature awakens - a mindless brute made of accursed earth, shaped like a man, but in no way mortal. A century and a half after its creation, the golem’s sole mission resumes: to assassinate a savage pro-slavery guerilla commander named “Bloody Bill” Wolcott. Wolcott, of course, is long dead, but his closest surviving descendant - a corporate IT burnout named Ben Middleton - is quite available.
