He could see his wife eyes wide and her face etched with confusion, worry and fright while her hair resembled a tumbleweed. Her knuckles had gone white from clutching a small parcel of clothes and other belongings to her chest.

She sat very still in the passenger seat with her knees so close to her body that she was almost curled into the fetal position. If it wasn't for the dire nature of the situation, he could find her disposition laughable. Max glanced into the rear-view mirror to check on the children. Their faces almost mirrored their mothers except Joshua kept looking back nervously as though he expected the car to be descended on by murderous agents at any moment. Esther on the other hand was biting her nails with such vigor that she was likely to be biting through the bone soon. Now that they know and have experienced the dark side to his alternate world, Max had long ago prepared for this kind of situation but his family were innocent to a life where this kind of plan would even be necessary.

As he sped down the expressway to his safe house, Max knew that his family would never be the same again.

This is not how he intended to spend his Friday night.
