Publisher's Summary

All Cam Alvarez has known is war.

For three years, he’s fought the marauding alien Tahni on one God-forsaken planet after another, leading a squad of armored Drop Troopers.

But the war is about to change.

Cam is an officer now, fresh out of OCS and taking charge of his old platoon, and things have reached a tipping point. Instead of fighting a desperate holding action against the enemy, the Commonwealth is finally ready to take back the human colonies the Tahni seized early in the war. To free the people the enemy have kept as human shields.

However, victory comes at a price. Both for the hostage colonists and the Marines who fight to free them. When innocent lives are at stake, every shot fired is danger close...

More, more I say!

I couldn't stop listening to this. I enjoyed the inner struggle the MC goes through, lonely is the head that wears the crown. The combat is simple and straight forward, though the author reflects on the overall battle afterwards which helps to give a better overview. All in all, I'm looking forward to the next one.

This guy doesn't know how to write a bad book.

I don't know how I never heard of this guy before. Military scifi with big guns and bigger mechs. I love this stuff! The narrator is good, the book is really good.

A perfect example of how an author grows

Rick Partlow is very good at plot structure, dialogue and in general, telling a good story. Yes, there are huge plot holes, but his characters are becoming less one-dimensional, the Universe richer and I see the possibility of multiple plot lines within a same book in the future.

only Con: The books are too short
Narrator: Narration is DECENT, but the performer should focus more on making the characters distinguishable. Sometimes, females speak like males, he oftens losses continuity and except for the captain, almost everyone sounds the same.

I keep coming back.

Every time I finish a book in this series I think it's the best one so far. Than I listen to the next. If you've listened to the other books in the series you'll get more of the same. More darkness. More terrible odds. More people we really wish wouldn't die. And more pull to keep listening to the next word till the light starts breaking over the horizon.

Outstanding

The entire series is absolutely fantastic. I know book 4 is out on paperback and book 5 is coming. I can’t wait for those to hit audible. In my mind I can see these as a completely realistic look at the future!

The story carries on with its greatness. Holds up strong. As good as book two? No but book two was amazing in my eyes but still just as good. World building good and I’m so invested and i definitely feel super attached to the characters. I’ve always been a huge fan of Killing anyone off but!! I really want Cam and Vicky to have a happy ending! Bring on the next book!
