Publisher's summary

An old world killer is back. The race is on to stop a catastrophic pandemic.

After an exchange student with bubonic plague turns up in a Reno hospital, a contractor with identical symptoms dies in Los Angeles.

The government‘s official stance is that the cases are isolated and the outbreak is under control. But George Mack, a 30-year public health veteran, quickly realizes this is no ordinary plague. The death toll is too high, and the spread pattern make no sense. As Reno’s hospitals fill with plague victims, Mack begins to believe that there is more to the epidemic than the CDC is letting on - and that he must take drastic steps if he hopes to save his city.

Medical resident Dr. Susan Barry just wants to finish her training and get a real job. But when plague patients start showing up in her Los Angeles hospital, her plans for the future suddenly go off the rails. Faced with a growing crisis, Susan teams up with an old research mentor to determine the unthinkable: Is the rapidly spreading plague an act of bioterrorism? Racing against the clock, Susan must also confront another disturbing possibility. She may be one of the plague’s few survivors.

In eastern Oregon, John Harr makes a pact with his fellow ranchers to keep the “California” plague out of the high desert where they live. Using roadblocks and quarantine, Harr and his neighbors think they’ve secured their home - until a mysterious and heavily armed convoy comes to town, and Harr must use training from his past life in the military to protect the people he loves.

Great addition to the gerne

I am a huge fan of end of the work fiction. This is close to the 100th book in the genre I have read. It's a refreshing change of pace from the typical prepared kill everyone style that is usually adopted. It gives the perspective of front line workers from the initial outbreak. The characters are well developed and written. There are a few loose ends in the book but I feel they will be covered in further books. The narration is great and level. Can't wait for the next book.

Very well written

The story is eerily familiar. Bummed that Book 2 isn’t out yet. How long will we have to wait? The characters are starting to make sense now. Looking forward to the next book.

Villains at work towards EOTW

Loved the story and the characters! Can't wait for the next audible. Good narrator. This held my attention throughout.
Looks like the tale is setup to follow a group of survivors to a place where they can do that.
I am sure it will follow, along with a a number of of trails and tribulations, the difficulties encounterd in achieving that goal.

Incredibly slow, repetative, and boring

I have no idea how this book is rated 4.6 stars. It is so slow, so boring. Nothing happens other than people get infected and go to the hospital for treatment where it spreads through cities. No action, no excitement, no mystery, no adventure. Reading this book was like watching Grey's Anatomy without any drama, story line variety, or attactive females to keep you interested.

Fantastic, haunting apocalypse!

Expertly written from start to finish, offering a haunting look into a world losing the battle with a drug-resistant pandemic that ravages the United States. Fantastic narration.
